Did Lance ride an Alu bike in 1999?
When was the last time a TdF won on an aluminum bike? I thought it was Lance in 99' but I could be wrong....

Nope he rode the OCLV carbon in 1999, last aluminum would have been Pantani the year before in 1998 on an aluminum Bianchi. Ullrich also won in 1997 on an aluminum Pinarello.

Impossible. Carbon explodes within the first 200 miles.

Lance's real technological advantage was that he had half his blood removed for the mountain stages so he was lighter. Remember the Alpe D'huez TT? He needed to have steel bolts put in the come in above the UCI weight limit....he just drained some extra blood to make up the difference. I read that he had a drain installed in his heel for easy out flow.

I wonder if his carbon bikes are "off the shelf" as advertised, or customs. My guess would be very carefully layed up, tested and specific frames to be used only by his majesty - tires too.
