The ride started out with us almost hitting a young owl on the side of the road.

We found an orange cone and kept it safe until enough pedestrians congregated and a brave young girl carefully picked it up and moved it into the bushes. Good luck little one!

Rode a few miles of dirt in Forest Park. My buddy on his Bontrager Race Lite, me on my mongrel International. We agreed that neither bike was much fun on the loose, rocky stuff, but we had a good time bumping along. At least this part of the fire road was smooth.

Downtown is starting to bounce back, and we wove our way back through the city. I love this weird, modern building that houses the NBC station in town. Formed concrete and oak window trim. They had it done up for the Olympics.

I finally started some mileage, a 30 miler from Woodinville home via the Burke.

The slough at the top of Lake WA

It is impossible to have a bad ride if you see a baby duck.

Bridge up in Fremont

Cruise ships back

Always a nice place for a cool stop

Ran into a fellow at Alki Beach. Older fellow, no shirt, beard to his mid chest. My kind of human. He says he got the Raleigh for 15 bucks at Goodwill in 96, overhauled it and left the frame original. He laughed at how much more the saddle was than the bike!

Around Lincoln City

Still in Lincoln City, so yesterday just pottered around town, about 45km. Discovered that S Schooner Creek Rd and Bear Creek Rd can take one through from Hwy 101 in Lincoln City to Rose Lodge on Hwy 18.

Edisto Beach SC

When there’s hard pack, dirt roads here can be managed on 23s -

- but when it’s loose sandy stuff, I’m hoofing it. I see I’m not alone in that. I see deer every morning here.

Those are Primo Comet tires. They feel very lightweight and have good grip. So even with the long wheelbase, the bike feels quite nimble.

These were a good replacement for the stock wheels and knobbies because I want to save them for resale, if that ever happens. And the mission of this Trek will be commuting and short jaunts around town here - it is absolutely perfect for that.

Tested out both my new camera and the new non-indexed approach to shifting the Davidson's FD. Beautiful day for around 40 miles of smooth trail with little wind in either direction. The FD shifts perfectly smoothly both up and down with the old-school lever, so I'm gonna leave it this way - I don't even care that it looks a little goofy

Brought my Eisentraut up to the beach house and got out for a ride yesterday. After stopping for a little b'fast in South Haven, I rode a few miles out the Kal Haven trail.

Turned south at 60th St (CR 681 I think) and worked my way back from there. Lacota School.

Another old schoolhouse in worse shape.

Every now and then the pavement ends. Good thing my bike was wearing its Gravel Kings!

Nearly finished in the fire drive, wildflowers are springing up where before The Big Storm a couple years ago it was heavily forested.

Back at the beach house, the reason we keep coming back.

I was on vacation last week in Depoe Bay, and while there I rode a wonderful loop down U.S. 101 to Newport, out along Yaquina Bay to Toledo, up Highway 229 along the Siletz River and back down 101 -- about 68 miles of which I think 67.5 were absolutely gorgeous. Here are some highlights.

Just an old point/shoot Canon PowerShot SD790 IS. Always been a fan of Canon's Elph series; this one replaces a 520HS. So far, I'm very happy with the image quality - but I miss the 12x zoom of the 520HS.

Elephants

Took the 850 out on our Delaware and Lehigh trail (as in the rivers it follows). Lovely cool air this morning, no wind and a pretty frisky Lehigh river due to the amount of rain recently. Then I rode past these.

When I first saw these Mountain Laurel in bloom, marching down the steep hills along the Blue Ridge Parkway, many years ago, they reminded me of Hannibals elephants crossing the Alps then coming down the steep hills into Italy on their way to Rome. Weird huh? Ever since, when I see them in early summer I think of Hannibal's Elephants. Guess that says something about my mental acuity. Otherwise a very pleasant ride in the shade on a surface that is as close to pavement as you can get, due to the mine tailings used in the construction. A very fast blast through the woods.

52 miles up north after work. Haven't posted to this thread in a while, in spite of riding a lot. My old iphone had gotten so rickety, that the battery would be dead after 25 miles. Got a new phone, so I can take pics again.

Toagie fest (taco+hoagie) is happening in Highwood. After Fort Sheridan folded up the tent, all the Highwood strip clubs and tattoo parlors turned into high-end dinner joints.

A UP freight was parked on the tunnel. Made it through OK.

It's been really wet and humid in July - now we have fungus. Need to pull out the guides and ID these.

A key road across a ravine has been "closed" most of the season to fix a stability issue. It's a real mess, but you can still get through on a bike.

Thursday night concerts are back!!! Big crowd and good tunes. Heard a great country band with a hot pedal steel player here a few years back.

Had to wait on the Purple line on its way to Howard. Got home just ahead of the rain.

Nice! Some of my favorite territory. We're actually thinking of moving to Newport in a couple of years. The valley summers are getting unbearable the past few years.

Newport is nice. We stayed in Depoe Bay and did most of our touristing in Lincoln City, but if I were to live in one of these places Newport would be the choice. The daily high temperatures were hovering around 60 degrees the week we were there with lows around 50 -- perfect for summer cycling! In around Toledo and Siletz it got into the upper 60's and I had to take off my long sleeve jersey.
