135mm wheel from a 130mm?

135mm wheel from a 130mm?
Annoying me again.
Last question. [and completely unrelated to bottom brackets! :-) ]
but I would really like to move along a build I've be procrastinating on for months - a Rivendell Sam Hillborne.
I thought I was all sset to go with parts when a Rear Wheel hurdle arose.
I have DOZENS of wheelsets, all 700c but also all 126 or 130mm spaced for road bikes.
this SH frame apparently was originally speced needing a 700c 135mm spaced rear wheel
I have none.
A) why might Rivdendell have speced a 135 700c wheel?
B) can I convert one of my 130mm spaced rears to 135mm - swap out the axle and add some spacers?
I really just want to get it on the road to see how it feels. If it amuses me, I'll then invest in some better, appropriately spaced wheels.

Sure. There are a couple of ways to do this.
You can add 5mm to the NDS, but that also means re-dishing the wheel and whether you have enough spoke threads to center it.
You can add 1-2mm of washers on DS and the rest on the NDS so less re-dishing is needed.
You can find a happy medium and make the OLD 132.5mm and just close the dropouts in a little more. A number of frames were made with dropouts at 128mm to accommodate 126mm or 130mm. And some frames were made with 132.5mm dropouts to accommodate 130mm and 135mm.

Get a 5mm longer axle and add 5mm of spacing to the drive side. EDIT- Make that NON DS.
Redish by tightening the NDS spokes. 1/4 turn and recheck for centering between the DO's. Repeat if needed.
Don't touch the DS spokes. The amount of tension you add to the wheel will be negligible and DS has MUCH less effect on dish anyway.
The redishing is the easy part, assuming your nipples aren't frozen.
This will be about 1/2mm of length on the NDS spoke.
That's the CORRECT way to do it. It also makes the wheel stronger since it reduces dish.
Adding spacing to the DS might give RDER travel issues and won't be "as strong" of a wheel that you could have.

135 was likely chosen because there's more options for hubs/wheels that are more along the lines of the bike's intended uses. It also results in a stronger wheel as already mentioned. Some of us have been doing this with our otherwise road 700C bikes for decades. Andy

I was able to steal a longer axle from a MTB wheel and retrofit one of my 130mmOLD 700c wheels.
seems to work.

I thought that Rivendell spaced their frames at 132.5 mm at the rear so that you could use either 130 or 135. Sorry I found the latest chart that shows 135 spacing.

I would take the bike to a decent LBS and have them bend the rear triangle to 132.5. At that spacing you could run 130 or 135 anytime.

I said to add the spacing to the DS instead of NDS, which was incorrect.
