There's been so many senseless bike deaths in LA, I don't even know why I still bother to ride my bike. Every few weeks, my social media feed has reports of bike accidents/fatalities from numerous cyclists within my inner and outer circle. RIP Doctor.

I am very upset by this. I don't know what it is with cycling that dehumanizes us in the minds of non-cyclists.

Video captures California ER doctor being run over by vehicle, then stabbed to death by alleged driver | WPDE

This video shows this lowlife smashing the cyclist into the air and barely missing an oncoming vehicle making a left turn through the intersection.

I used to ride there on
pch all the time when I lived in OC.
I guess you need to carry a sidearm when you go out, in case somebody runs into you and tries to stab you to death.

RIP for the doctor, this is really sad. I'd love to find out what the motive/intent of this was behind the driver's actions. Its been a few decades since I used to ride through there regularly, but I don't remember that intersection, PCH towards Dana Point, or Crown Valley Parkway being dangerous. All are pretty wide streets with good bicycle lanes painted along the curb, the only issue I remember was the bicycle lanes disappeared and turned into right turn lanes as you approached the intersections (you can see this on google maps satellite view). It does get bad once you get north of there into South Laguna Beach as PCH narrows considerably and there's curbside parking where there's beach access. I'll have to ride down there and check it out one of these days (the joys of being retired!).

I saw this on a different forum and thought it was worth sharing here:

https://heavy.com/news/vanroy-evan-smith/amp/

I can’t imagine what the family of the deceased is going through. I hope they don’t allow a plea for the accused. I’m not sure how any of those legal proceedings work, but this is such a senseless tragedy and there should be no leniency.

I do a fair amount of riding in a lake/mountain community where I live outside of the summer season when traffic is light and people still treat cyclists as expendable or as a nuisance. It’s amazing to go outside the front door and onto a bike in a gorgeous area. I refuse to ride June-Labor Day or so on those roads, and will drive to a different area to ride.

Be safe, everyone.

A little bit of update: Vanroy Smith was supposed to have a court hearing this past Tuesday (February 14), but it was indefinitely postponed and he's been ordered to go through a psychiatric and psychological evaluation process to see if he's sane enough to stand trial. Apparently he contacted the local newspaper (Orange County Register, I couldn't get behind the paywall to read it all) and started spouting off how he was 'Jesus', the 'King of Kings', and no one would keep him locked up. He was also held on a '5150' issued by Long Beach PD in the past, determined to be bipolar, possibly schizophrenic, but his ex-wife (divorced about a decade ago) never remembers him having any issues like that. At least he's in custody and can't hurt anyone on the 'outside' anytime in the foreseeable future.

Vanroy Evan Smith admits random killing of bike-riding doctor, claims to be God; San Fernando Bike Path takes shape - BikinginLA

The above article quotes parts of the killer's interview with the Orange County Register. Who knows whether this is just an elaborate ploy to avoid the death penalty?

I do not recall that running over a bicyclist then stabbing him while he is incapacitated on the street as symptoms of any mental illness.

Sounds like an ordinary case of road rage to me.

It's a shortcoming of the law not to interpret cars as weapons. He wasn't allowed to own firearms, so why was this thing even allowed to drive?
