What width are the MTB tires? I didn't think a road/gravel bike could work as a cross country mountain bike, but apparently I'm wrong (if the frame has enough clearance)!

This ‘88 RockHopper has two similar wheel sets, this one with the smoother tires for dry (mostly warmer) conditions and the other with small knob tires for softer, wetter, (mostly colder) conditions. Don’t think I have a photo of the small knob wheels set up as SS yet.

Mathematically, N-1(+2W) is equal to N-2W. Which is not what you’re trying to say.
But I get your meaning. I’ve been thinking about buying a very light, carbon fiber rim wheelset for my gravel bike - slap on some 35mm tires and ride it on pavement.

Yup, sold the road bike, using the gravel bike with a second wheelset for road use. I'll prob end up with a road bike again, but for now the Revolt is a solid quiver killer for me.

I did this exact same thing. I sold 3 bikes to fund one bike. I built two sets of wheels with the same hubs, rotors, and cassette. This makes the swap super easy.
Of course after this I accepted the fact that it is a disease and on a trip home from OH I picked up 4 old steel's and added 2 more since. I'm sick!

I guess I am not a modern cyclist?
No desire to eliminate my road bikes, my gravel bike, or my touring bike.
I could eliminate all of them and just use my gravel bike, but I am lazy and would not switch the tires each time. I would just ride it with gravel tires on pavement because I will still be fast enough and not want to swap tires multiple times a week.
More power to those that arent so lazy though.

The road bike has basically 2 sets- daily= 50mm w/23/25mm, and harsh conditions= 40mm w/ 27mm.
The CX bike has: daily/mixed= file tread; road/ faster= 30mm Schwalbe; mtn bike terrain= Tufo knobby w/ big cassette; CX/mud= Grifo.
All tubular. Also have several clincher sets but don't use them.

Great thread ! You guys hve inspired me to get another set of tires for my road bike. I want to be able to compare the ride differences between different tires and I will be able to swap wheels with different tires. The first comparison I want to do is compare the 25mm Conti Gatorskins I have ont he bike now with some 25mm Conti 5000's. I expect to feel like cloud 9 on the 5000's

Ha, I just misspoke. I'm too lazy to switch wheels multiple times a week. So I'm definitely too lazy to switch tires multiple times a week!
