I just got this old Peugeot road bike (for free!). I'm hoping it's a PX-10 (that's what I was told), but I also know it's possible that it's not! Any idea what year this would be? Is it a PX-10 model? I think the RD and saddle have been replaced, and - since the wheels don't match - probably one or both are not original.

I don't know exactly what I want to do with this one, but considering the condition (not great) I'm leaning towards practical changes (ie not worrying about being original).

The fork decal is a very good sign. What size is the seatpost? Mid 26 should mean butted main tubes.

Does anyone have a year estimate? Any idea why there's a wire loop on the bolt that attaches the front brake?

this thingus is termed variously a "tyre saver" & a "flint catcher"

the idea is that it knocks off small sharp bits which may get stuck in the tyre's tread before they can go round again (and again) until they cause a puncture

Yes, weight weenie madness, plenty of factory and plenty of homegrown/machining examples abound as well as exquisite craftsman work, Jon Williams, Curtis Odom and many others.

I'm no expert but also leaning towards older, the DT livery is earlier than many that we see, 69-73 could be spot on, very cool no matter what, even as rough as it is.

And as Tom Peterson always said, "free is a very good price".

Older DT script appears to show up in 68 with rainbow stripes on ST in French brochure, 67 and 66 don't show rainbows but 67 pic is recycled from 66 so.....

I would roughly say pre-72.

The only think throwing me off about year is what looks like a fairly upright head angle. It was my experience that didn't start happening until around '74 but the downtube decal sure looks earlier. My 72 (Prugnat lugs) is about that size and still has a slacker head angle. I could be wrong about the angle - maybe it the photo itself, or maybe they did build some that had steep head tubes before 72?

The seat tube decal appears to be a triangular shield (hard to tell) and not a square one so that would be pre-1972; down tube lettering is gold like pre-1972 as well.

Downtube lettering is I believe pre-1971, thinking this bike is 68-70 range.

The fork rake appears to my eye to be pre-1973, later forks has less rake bend in them.
I try not to judge angles from photos, the parallax distortion can change the angle that appears on my screen.
A straight-on photo from the side, taken at considerable distance, will best render the angles semi-accurately.
It's not unusual for the larger frames to have a steeper headtube angle, not sure if that's the case with old PX10's though.

I reached out to the previous owner. He said that he purchased it used in 1969. Are there pictures I could provide that would help with dating this bike, or at we as close as we're going to get?
How blasphemous would it be to spread the rear fork to accommodate a modern wheelset?

Someone will tell you, “It’s your bike.”
I say, if you haven’t yet ridden a similar bike as originally equipped, try that first. They shift and ride wonderfully. That was my PX-10 above in worse shape than yours. If you haven’t already, get a can of PB Blaster and spray all the bits and bobs and get it soaking.

Does this frame look like it could benefit from Meguiar's Scratch-X, Meguiar's Ultimate Compound, or Meguiar's #6? All are mentioned at a post on this site titled "

How to polish an old dull frame?"

(I can't include the link because I'm relatively new here). Or maybe another is more appropriate?

Also, I can't tell if the bottom bracket needs to be replaced. How much "play" should there be? I can move the pedal left/right about 1/32" (I'm not exactly sure), if that makes sense.
