I know this feeling and love it. That moment of solitude and serenity. You can hear the world; you can feel your feelings; you can hear yourself think. It's a big part of why I'm fit now, again, after 20 years of working in front a computer and doing not much else. The memory of this feeling is a motivator that never fails to keep me going back in the hope of more of it.

Sorry it didn’t quite work out, but I bet you get it right next time. Could I ask which gaps you went over and what the full 65 mile loop would have been? We have a second home in VT (near Burlington) and I’m always on the lookout for good road and gravel routes.

I started in Randolph, rode over Rochester Gap and ended up (a broken man) on Roxbury Mt. Road. The route is a bit circuitous because I was going for as much gravel as possible. The last stretch would be over the top to Roxbury and down 12A back to Randolph. It would be easy to make an almost all paved ride out of this by taking Camp Brook Rd. up to Rochester Gap and by following Rt. 100 instead of the back roads I used in Rochester and Warren.
Thanks for the encouraging words. I suspect I’ll give it another go sometime this year.

28 mostly flat rural mile this morning on a club ride. Only 6 riders on 2 tandems and 2 singles because it was cool and rain threatened. No rain till after the ride.

I finished Assault on Mt. Mitchell yesterday for the second time in three years. As I started up the mountain I kept asking myself what in the world made me sign up for this again. At least I PR'ed.

45 miles with local road club's B-group. First ride with them since my shoulder injury and thyroid cancer last year. Managed to hang on without getting exhausted for the first time. Energy level still feels low, like thyroid med isn't at correct level, but I'm gradually regaining some lost ground.

I rode up Fox Hill on a 22 mile ride early this afternoon after the rains passed. 121 feet of elevation gain on that hill but I was breathing pretty hard!

Rode past the road to the top of Mt. Mitchell when riding the Blue Ridge Parkway with my wife in 1981 but felt no urge to go up it. Very impressed by folks who do the annual Assault.

Yesterday 17 miles, about 1/2 mile of bone jarring craptastic gravel. Probably stay on the pavement today and do about 15.
Oh and I also went to the gym and did a bit of lifting.

Began at 12:20AM today and had 66 miles of moonlit magnificence with only one thump-thump caused by an opossum. Called it quits early with plenty of dark still left because I was feeling a tad tired. Showered, pj's on, some eats, surfed the net then stretched out on the couch for a quick 50 minute nap. Kitted up again and out the door for an additional 64 SUN FILLED HOT miles.

12 easy local miles late this afternoon. Feeling a lot like summer - 80's and humid.

A quick answer with a little video -----
Thursday night got an unusual 4 hours of good sleep. Friday daytime (retired 68yo geezer) had 3 cat naps of 1.5 hours total. Started my Friday night ride at 11:11PM. Made one stop at mile 112 then hooked up with Sat. LBS ride only for a couple of too fast miles.
Last night/today's one stop fun ride --- took some time to get into the groove since the wind was gusty at times.

Way to go! Hopefully it wasn’t too hot but I suspect it was warmer than normal. I’m an Assault on Mt Mitchell veteran as well. It’s a lot of climbing once you start up the last 5 miles on Hwy 80 to the Parkway. That 5 mile stretch is pretty steep as well. The last time I rode AOMM was 5-6 years ago when I turned 60. I was trying finish under 7 hours but wound up 2 minutes over and well off my PR of 6 hrs 37 mins.
I saw where an 18 year old was the first finisher in 5 hours.

Yes, an 18 year old did it in 5:06:09 average speed of 20mph. Crazy!

18 mile tandem club ride this morning (no hills) followed by a tandem club cookout/get-together to listen to the Indy 500. (This happened in Indy) Who won? A French guy.

Went for a real quick spin to the local park and back, before the temps soar to 94° in the shade....
7.50 miles in 30:13 including some short, but nasty hills, but like the "little engine that could" I had no trouble making it up them.
