New, Old bike day!

Added some more pictures per request.

Brought this home today and did shakedown ride.

Had done a fair amount of research before I picked up. Need some additional help nailing down actual year of build and if this was custom build or factory offered. Maybe I didn't look hard enough online.

What I know. All the catalogs, internet pictures and bikes like this for sale don't show ANY Campagnolo components on them. This bike is Campy everywhere! Right down to the headset and seat post clamp! Does have a Ritchey stem (Obscenely long!). All I have ever seen is Japanese components on these. The saddle and tires are non-original. All else appears to be original.

My LBS person whom is a Bianchi dealer and collector does not remember seeing this set up on these. Furthermore, I can't find any paint schemes like this one has, black with Celeste splatter. Including bottle cages and bars.

Now on to serial number. Can't find one! Looked in all the usual spots, BB, head tube, rear drop outs. Nothing.

So, feedback on year (figuring late 1980s early 90s) and serial number location would be great!

Cheers!

I believe the spatter paint was a 1989 model.

Nice bike!
Is that a mock-up number plate on your car to be used for online photos, or its an actual plate in OHIO? Super cool anyhow...

SO 80's! I'm most definitely not a fan of 'splatter' paint-jobs, but that's actually really cool looking. Looks like there's clearance for some serious rubber, too. Put on some gravel-style drop bars, celeste bar-tape....

Nope. That's my normal number plate.

Is that a Campagnolo Olympus rear derailleur? I ran one of those for several years on my old Rivendell, and it was a lovely bit of kit!

That is a stunning bike, and I'm in agreement about dropped bars with Celeste bar tape ...

I am surprised that there is no mention of the group hanging on the bike.......If that's Campagnolo Graphite Triple, score! I can't make out the rest but if it is campy and graphite, dbl score!
Best, Ben

Contrary to a lot of folx on here, I am a fan of splatter paint. This one is very cool.

The graphite Campy bits are a plus. How well does it shift? 1989 puts it nicely into the time period when Campagnolo was struggling to make their indexing systems work reliably.

The double decals on the same side of the top tube is a little funky. I bet the original owner dropped a lot of coin to put that thing together.

What a nice bike! I like it...

Do note that the plastic covering over your license plate could get ya a 1500 USD fine in Texas...

While I'm all out for drop bars, I would feel bad for those nice - and I'm pretty sure rare as well - Campy grips from the Olympus group.

Thanks for all the feedback. Some good answers. Convinced now will be OK to pull the red Campy decals off top tube.

Wheels and components are graphite color. My suspicions are confirmed by comments that owner had all the Campy stuff installed, which again was a BIG part of my wanting to purchase bike. Spatter paint was another.

Thanks for identifying group as Olympus, was a mystery to me! Shifts pretty well! Normal chain issues when close to limits on gears ranges.

As for plate cover, good thing this car will most likely never be in Texas! Great state, just no plans to drive there.

Now I just need to figure out if I want to keep or pass on. Won't say where I found, but I really don't think the town populace really knew how to appreciate the bike.

Best,

Mike

Some guys have all the luck!

Fabulous looking Super Grizzly, I wish I had seen it first. I had a Cannondale with Olympus back then and after replacing the “RollOff” chain with a basic Swedish it was a fabulous machine. But a bit loud.

Look at the back left of the seattube for the serial.

So those are 700c wheels, right? Looks like gobs of tire clearance, a la early "29er" style. Neat bike, enjoy!

Thanks! I'll check there. Still not sure whether to keep or send off to a better home.

Well I’m not anxious to have a 26” wheeled bike kicking around but if that’s a 20” or close I may reconsider.

BG aside, there's no way in H**L I would move this on.

We've already determined it is a pretty rare bird, in great shape, upgraded into the stratosphere, etc, etc ad nauseum.

Sadly, N+1 is reaching it's limits storage wise. We'll have to see what can be done. Already have three bikes in garage attic, albeit they are the next bikes for my grandson as he grows.

Trust me, I get it, critical mass quickly approaching my mess. And of course this presents its own special challenges, who really cares, probably not going to ride it, somewhat obscure and doesn't fit, etc, etc.

Still, probably never going to see one again, especially this cool, decked out, good shape, yada yada.

It would go great in my horde with this that is way too small, rough shape but cool and rare as ef, not going anywhere and couldn't get it in my hands fast enough.

One of only a dozen or so made according to Jim.
