Here's my wife's new Fuji mixte. It's a clickable thumbnail.

It's mostly Shimano 600. The shifters are Ultegra bar ends converted to thumbshifters. I stained and shellaced the cork grips in an effort to match the B18 saddle. The fenders are zebra wood and purple heart. I still need to clean up and install the matching Blackburn front rack.

Here's a clearer shot:

That thing is drop dead gorgeous!

Did you hand polish the rack and crank?

Lucky lady to have that puppy roll out from under the tree!

I took that picture with the camera I gave her for Christmas and it came out too dark. I'll take another one with my own camera and replace that one. Both the rack and crank were in very bad shape when I got them. I sanded the rack after I straightened it and finished it off with steel wool for a satin finish. I spent half of my Chirstmas vacation on that crank. I stripped it with oven cleaner, sanded it steel wooled it and then finished it on a cotton buffing wheel.

Here is the mixte I just finished for my wife. I stole the idea from dirtdrop here on the forums! except I added a Nexus 7 spedd internal hub instead of a single speed. The fenders & rack are from a peugeot I trashed picked. She loves it!

Yes. I got lucky and was the first caller I think. I gave it to my wife for Christmas. It was a great price and the seller was a good guy. New bar tape, cables, housing and mechanically perfect.

The seller finds them, cleans them up, repacks all the bearing and replaces any worn components. He also offered a 1 year warranty on everything. Just the kind of guy I like to do business with.

Dirtdrop, that is a beautiful bike. I would know that my husband dearly loved me if he'd gotten me that bike. Of course, he doesn't know that I'm getting not one, but two RED mixtes! Not that he minds. Did you tell us where you got the zebrawood mudguards? Those are really nice. I may have to check them out for one or both of the new mixtes.

Fender1, that mixte looks even better in focus!

Machin Shin, fender1, and Dirtdrop, I hope that all your wives were properly appreciative of those bikes.

Gorgeous examples, all.

I got the fenders from cody6702 on eBay. If a set doesn't sell, he puts them back up at a discount. That's how I got them. They're 1 1/2 inches wide and are a very close fit with sidepull brakes.

fender1

I like the Peugeot fenders. You forgot the rear brake!

I've put cody6702 in as one of my favourite sellers. I'll have to pick up a pair or two of those mudguards. Would you believe that I currently have only one bicycle equipped with mudguards?
He's got some brilliant pieces there.

Happy Holidays!

I finished the '78 Schwinn Collegiate 3-spd just in time for Christmas! My wife loves it.
We should have fun this Spring riding with the kids through the neighborhood.
(That's my '74 Suburban 10-spd in the background. Both came from the same thrift.)

Best wishes for a wonderful new year!

1973 P60

This isn't exactly a mixte, but it was Schwinn's finest in 1973. I purchased the bare frame a couple of years ago and built it up as original from the headset and seatpost down, with the exception of the pedals and rubber. The pedals are steel Campy instead of the stock alloy-caged version. The tires are still vintage, being the inappropriately named Clement Gentleman 27x1. Oh, and the rims are not correct, as I used a pair of Weinmann Concaves that I had kicking around and those were not available until 1977.

The stem is a 3TTT and the bars are modern alloy, with the finish polished off. The brake levers are blue Dia Compe, sized for smaller hands and the shifters are 2nd-generation Deore XT set to friction mode. Saddle is a Terry.

My wife absolutely loves this bike. She has some joint issues that make riding drop bars painful after a while. The tight, upright riding position that this setup offers feels great to her, visibility is excellent, it's easy to get on and off, and the bike is quite light. Index shifting would be nice, but so is riding an unusual classic. I would have preferred to use period correct bars and controls, but much of these components were what was on hand and the tourist levers of that era can't hold a candle to mountain levers in the safety department. The trickest component is the Campy DT cable stop / pump holder. The most outrageous is the Paramount headbadge that cost me almost as much as I paid for the frameset.

This photo was taken on the bike path in Stowe, Vermont.

DD, your spouse's new mixte is totally stunning for sure. What bars and brake levers did you use? I can't believe how well they fit in with the overall look.

Raleigh Mixte on Mpls. Craig's List $40.

Looks OK as-is, but maybe worth upgrading to make something nice.

You know, I know I put out a call for a red mixte, but this is ridiculous! The Raleigh is very nice.
