Rare Framebuilding Parts Sticky

These lugs were designed by master framebuilder Mario Confente, for Medici Cycles.

They were given to me by another master of the craft, Brian Baylis.

I don't know how rare they are, but I've never seen another set.

I have a couple sets, forget where I got them. Not from Baylis, I would remember that. More likely ebay.
Sorry this pic is so bad, amongst a pile of other lugs, but I figger POIDH and a bad pic is better than none.

Bill Davidson has one lug, not a set just a lonely single lug that started out as a Bocama sheetmetal lug that's been added to with bronze and steel and filed into a Confente shape. I'm 99% sure it was modded by Mario himself and sent to Japan as a model to make IC lugs from. Davidson had very close ties to Takahashi, designed lugs for them and was the sole US distributor for them for a while. So I suspect (without evidence) that he got that lug from Takahashi, who must have ended up with it after Mario's passing. I may have asked Bill where he got it, but that would have been 25+ years ago and I don't remember. To the extent that Confente lugs and Medici lugs are different, Davidson's sample lug is Confente not Medici. Visit Davidson's shop in Seattle to hold that lug in your hand, and lot of other interesting lugs, crowns, BB shells, dropouts etc. It's not like a museum, just a pile of old steel bits on a shelf

NIce! I'd be interested in some of those if you're willing to part with them. Particularly the Gipiemme horizontal dropouts and the Shimano (also Gipiemme?) semi-vertical dropout sets.

I would be interested in the track rears if you're clearing stuff out.

Alas, the track ends are keepers, I'm afraid.

I have a few fun things that I've been hording. I'm sure someone will question putting the Ibis bits on a frame not built by Ibis. Not sure where they will end up at this point. The Paul track ends are rad and I do wish he would start making them again.

Those of us who have been at this for a while have their "special stash" of goodies. When we're gone the stash's value will tank as few others will value them as well. Andy

Rivendell Lugs

If anyone is interested in a set of these, please contact me via email - kirk dot pacenti at outlook dot com.

I have a limited supply and they are expensive, but a great bit of framebuilding history.

Best regards,
Kirk Pacenti

Roland Della Santa's tubing collection has a few rare parts.

So far I have succeeded in not asking how much for a Vitus tube set.

There are some interesting parts in this collection. Are they all for sale? Are they still available? Do you have any other (beside Flickr) contact info for this person?

Anyone wanting to build a Riv Road "homage" should buy some of my Riv crowns too. As used by Richard Sachs among others. A wise man once said "expensive, but a great bit of framebuilding history": $80 each plus shipping. I think I have about 6 of 'em.

Fair warning, Riv redesigned them and said it was because these originals failed some lab test, I forget the details. But I have never heard of one failing in use, and Sachs has said he feels they are totally strong enough. He put them on cyclocross bikes and they didn't break. Seems like road would be more gentle than that.

The redesign replaced the rectangular slots between the "plates" with ovals, i.e. like this but with the corners of the slot rounded instead of square. I bet you can achieve the same effect by adding a tiny fillet of braze in those corners, as the last step in brazing them. Plus the redesigned crowns aren't as cool looking IMHO.

Plenty of room for a 35 mm tire, maybe 38 mm. I get 44.5 mm between the insides of the blades at the tire clearance point. Inch steerer, natch.

FYI here's what the redesigned crown looks like:

This is not the style I'm selling, mine are the v.1, square-cornered slots.

those are the Medici lugs shown for the most part, They were "inspired" by the BCM Confente modified lugs but were when set next to each other poor imitations.
there was much lost in translation. As a designer, I have seen this time and again in the pre 3D modeling era. the toolmaker has a much easier time with simple arcs and radii, a developed curve... not.
No idea where the "dropped" lug ear shape came from either. Was not part of the Confente drawings. (which Jim Cunningham had printed onto a t shirt way way back)
the initial run had no windows, the later sets had the Medici window cast in.
These lugs were a surprise to Mario, they went to Medici and ticked him off.
Had Mario lived he was working on a total reboot to place distance from him and Medici.
Way way too much visual confusion, the lugs were close, the model names on the chainstays...

I agree, Medici lugs are sort of naïve compared to a Confente, whose curves were so much more refined. Yeah, what's up with those seatpost pinchbolt ears? Kinda dumb and ugly. Apologies to anyone who loves their Medici, but they're not Confente-level and that's just a fact!

I'm so mad that we never got to see what he would have done next. Of course "our" loss is trivial compared to what his wife suffered. So sad.

3 Rensho? The crown is modern, lugs are old(er).

Haden crown, cool English ends, basic but neat track crown

Canadianised Cinelli

Those remind me of Nervex, but I think they were used on cheap(er) bikes.

You might be aware, but the seat lug in this photo is not part of the set, rather it belongs to the Columbus MS (multi-shaped) tubeset. Nice to see the original BB shell.

You are correct, good catch! I was fooled by the rust pattern. I have a matching seat lug but it's a modern repro like the crown.
