Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I can't figure out what's going on at the seat tube lug- how are the stays attached? The paint has camouflaged the attachment. The stays look like they are sort of fastback attached under the seat bolt?

Level the bar tops and hoods with the ground. They are currently in line with the positive rise stem.
If rotating the bars down makes it tough to get into the drops, maybe swap the spacer currently above the stem to push the bars up higher.

i did not even realize I had aligned them like that until I took the pic and posted it. I set the bars level and it looks and feels much better. I am not looking for hot to be honest but I do want it to look good while still comfortable to ride. The green color limits what I can do Color wise with bar tape.

Has the potential to warm up quite a bit, but the lack of racy saddle-bar drop is a chiller. Presentation could also be improved.

New wheels will happen probably this winter but for now, these will have to do.

Let me have it. Suggestions?

If I didn't already have and love my CAAD 12 I'd be looking for a CAAD 13.

What is going on with the bike fits on these two bikes? The Specialized has the seat slammed like a bmx bike, but the stem is a 120 with 50mm of spacers underneath. Just FYI, you don't have to flat-foot at stoplights while sitting on the seat. If that's your proper seat height, theres some funny business going on.

And the Cannondale? The bike is too big based on the seat height, but the stem is flipped up so that bars are almost above the seat. Oh and the handlebar rotation? Its that way because the bike is too big. You shouldn't have to do that.

No way these bikes handle well, and shame on the LBS that sold you these and set them up this way.

it’s a great riding bike I’m sure! To get more hot, assuming you don’t care about keeping it 100% timely, look at some of the newer saddles which are hot and more comfortable and perhaps wheels.

Below is my other pride and joy, also 1987, Chorus 8spd, slightly more modern saddle and new wheels set up tubeless which i feel really helps
with the ride qualities. I found someone through these forums who had machined a bunch of spacers which allow a modern campy cassette and freehub to be used with the 8 spd, shifts flawlessly

This was right after I got the bike. All the adjustments that you mentioned were done and the bike handles great.

looks good. Eventually I want to put a modern group on it, but I got the almost unused roval wheels for free and love how they ride. Unfortunately they are freewheel, so I’m stuck with 7 speeds until I wear them out or get bored. If I happen across a cheap modern campy tubular wheelset tho, I’ll end up going fully modern.

Thank you

It's a lot of fun. I'm finally getting more adjusted to the position as it's quite a bit more aggressive than what I've ridden before, but I keep setting PRs every time I ride it so something must be working well

B&W photo but the bike is entirely b&w. It's a 2001 Principia Rex. Have posted a near identical photo elsewhere here I think but this has the steering column a bit shorter. In the pic it has an 9 speed ultegra 6500 rear derailleur. Unfortunately it was damaged when I bought the bike and I've since swapped it for a new Sora nine speed. The bike was originally set up for triathlon. I changed the bars and put a shorter 10cm stem on it. It inherited the bar end shifters from the aero bars but in the future I may put STI levers. I think there are 105s in 9 speed. May also put 25mm tyres on it soon replacing these 23mm ones. Cheers

looks… comfortable.

aesthetically needs more seatpost showing and more saddle to bar drop… although those drops are so deep that it actually seems like you’d be in a good position in the drops.

it’s a hot tourer. A luke warm road bike.
