Last year I bought an early 80s Mikkelsen frame here and built it up with shiny 11s Campy bits.
Well, now I've rebuilt it with mostly Shimano 105, seven speed stuff. Better suits this bikes 126mm nature.
Been 15 years since using downtube shifters and taking some getting used to. Gotta love the simplicity and directness of the DT cable run.

Huret Rival S 1982 front derailleur rebuild:

from disraeligears

I didn’t get many before pics but it was grimey and wouldn’t shift to the granny gear. Shifts fine now, probably could just have loosened the two bolts with the plastic washers a tiny bit but it was fun to clean up. I did try and get the spring open but luckily it would not unscrew.

Cleaning up this old Puch US Series Toledo. Everything is cleaning nicely except the front wheel. Plenty of rust work on that one.

So this followed me home from the Salvation Army. Not exactly wrenching on, but furiously readjusting to make it sorta fit me. Otherwise, just worked this over with an oiler.

Not exactly vintage either / about 2001 vintage.

Want to see if I can like it.

It was sitting there in the Salvation Army seeking salvation.

Does obsolete 22-year-old count as vintage? I bought a 1999 Cannondale Silk Path 500 for $25 Friday and worried I’d overpaid - NOTHING moved, But then I got it into the workshop and found that the Headshok still lives and the frozen headset was due to a failed sealed bearing - I have the $15 eBay replacement on its way. No pix of the finished work but I was able to fix the taco’ed rear wheel by loosening all the spokes, clamping the rim onto a vise and the alternately pulling and shoving with bare hands and a 3-foot length of pipe to get it close to right. In the end the final nasty bend required chocking the wheel upon on some large blocks and smacking the affected area with a rubber mallet. 30 minutes in the truing stand
and it’s like it was always straight and true. Now to wait for bearings and a chain …

Mountain bike years are a lot shorter than road bike years. They get to be vintage sooner.

Yesterday, I took inventory of my spare tubes... 27 of them in circulation, only one oddball (a 24") that wouldn't fit on one of our bikes. Is that a normal number to have?

And with the Raleigh mascot looking on, maybe it needs a live companion?

Just realized this bike has a great big 2X drivetrain,

I just bought an 11-42 11 speed CS-M5100 cassette to start screwing around with, like I need another project of wingnut proportions.

Classic not vintage...

It's a frame manufactured in Taiwan for a bike shop near Chicago. Double butted Champion tubing, lugged, made sometime between 1995 and 2000. Like I said, classic. I built it with 105 drive train, Dura-Ace shifters, Diacompe brakes, Sugino triple crankset, Nitto handlebars and stem, and Suize hubs. It now has a Brooks Honey B17 saddle.

The ‘99 Cannondale Silk Path 500 hybrid that started out like this -

- is now like this.

I think it all turned out pretty well. The wheels spin smoothly again, it shifts crisply, the brakes stop the bike nicely and it all works well together. I could actually have done it as a Clunker Challenge 100 entry - $25 acquisition, $15.06 for sealed headset bearings on the ‘Bay, $12.00 for brake cables and housing at the LBS. Add on the used Origin8 saddle I value at $10 and we’re well within budget. The test ride revealed that it all works correctly and it’s very plush feeling on the road - and I am eager to move it on to its next rider because it’s just a little too Cadillac-ish for me!

Had to really scramble to get this one repaired in time for this year's Bicycle-Quarterly Un-meeting on Mt. Tam, which went down on Friday.

Found a crack in the fillet braze on top of the bb shell, so had to create a "mechanical bandage" because no local framebuilder could possibly address this in mere days.

The 53-mile off-road ride was a blast, and the all-day repair job did more than it needed to:

Adding one more photo, with mention that the 700x43mm "Hurricane Ridge" tires from Rene Herse (i.e. Jan and Panaracer) were transformative in the bike's ability to handle the rocky terrain (versus the 33mm Mavic AllRoads previously installed).

Today I was working on the first Specialized Allez I've gotten my hands on. Had put several sets of wheels for sale locally yesterday and I guy came up yesterday to get a set for his Allez. We worked a deal for one set and some tires I had around. Then while B.S.ing a bit we got talking about all the dead trees in my yard. There were several talls one I was leery of dropping since they were so close to the road. Anyway we wound up making a deal of him dropping the trees for a cheap quoted price while I sorted out his bike. So he came back today and dropped all the trees while I swapped on the new wheels, mounted the tires with new tubes, and then cleaned and serviced his really grimy bike. Degreased his whole drive train, relubed everything, washed the bike, polished and waxed the frame, etc. Was just getting ready to pull the tatty bartape off when he finished so didn't get to that. All in all he was happy and dropped another $100 off the work. Win, win in my book.

I think the bike was a 1993 and while a bit beat up now you could tell it was a decently put together frame back in the day. Most RX1000 parts on it with indexing DT shifters. Did have a nice 600 Tricolor crank on it.

Last night, I filed/ground one of my headset wrenches to 33mm. Finally I can adjust the oddball headset on my Diamondback without using a large pair of vise grips!

(Hoping the adjustment will stay put better, too.)

Needed a bike lock since I'm in London, but carrying them is a pain in the arse.
I got this lock because it's "sold secure gold", it's comparatively light and cheap, and it's red.
The bracket that comes with it secures round any of the main tubes, it's a clamp with 2 parts that bolt together.
Here's another way to fit it:

Edit: and here's the link to the lock https://www.amazon.co.uk/Master-Lock...1&sr=8-33&th=1

Took this off the commuter. Schwalbe Marathon Supreme. 4 years I've run it. Plenty of tread, but the sidewall let go. Miraculously did not blow out, but I noticed tube bulging through. I've got another old Bontrager tire on there now, awaiting Compass tires to be switched from my Ron Cooper after I put 650b on that.

Was that caused by a too-high brake pad? The fuzzy edge of the fabric flap suggests that it was.

I don't think so. I've had the same brake pads on that bike since before covid, with zero adjustment, so it would have shown up sooner. They're cantilevers, so wear would make them lower, not higher. They are hitting the rim well below the edge at this point.

I have a history of putting too little air in my tires (as evidenced by the fact that it didn't blow out even though I could see the tube bulging) and not cleaning the bike. I've had sand and grit stick along the rim edge and do this to an older tire before.

That black/blue/black twining on the left side isn't really working, is it?
