Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

- I secretly like passing roadies all decked out in riding gear
- I wince when I hear "fixie"
- Lately I have been considering buying a geared bike

I randomly lose my balance for no reason when stopped at lights whilst leaning on one foot or a pole. I'm sure this looks hilarious as the "oh ****" reaction is 10x worse than what's needed to catch myself.

Tell your family not to be surprised if they find you on the sidewalk having been strangled with shifter cables.

Even though I know my roadie is actually faster, my fixed gear feels faster when I'm pedaling hard through town, and I don't know why.

Because you are spinning like a madman as opposed to just coasting!

I'm old, w/an 80s Fuji Del-Rey fg conversion. Color qued red/black. It's got front and rear brakes. So, sue me. Recently it was tapped for a wb cage and a framepump. Got a seatpost rack/trunkbag combo for hauling stuff to and from work. SKS Raceblades! My daily commute is 41 mi. rt. I like passing roadies in the morning who are too cool to give a wave or lift a finger. My commuting garb is mtb shorts w/rb tops and road shoes.

All totaled, including a sb/pc paint job I spent about 400.00 on this bike. It's by far my favorite and I'll will it to whichever of my grandchildren shows an interest.

Once on my way into work I had to drop a deuce in the weeds...I've carried a small, plastic garden spade and recyclable TP ever since. If any you ever come to visit I'll show you where it happened.

Obviously, I own a bike, but I like you guys, too.

Your bike sounds awesome. Put a picture up in the picture thread so we can see it

Confession: It's a Gatorade and Advil kind of morning. Hoping to make pancakes and bacon for breakfast, if we have all the ingredients. Only had 4 beers last night, but I'm a lightweight and other than the High Life at the 4am country and western bar (only a few places in Chicago have 4am liquor licenses) they were real beers. I rode my bike out and even tipsy now feel comfortable enough riding fixed. Yay!

When I see some kid on a single speed (not fixed) I think, "poser." When I see some kid on a single speed (not fixed) and only a front brake I think, "really? why?" I want to get my fg conversion bike built back up so that I will have something to do in the winter - I can play bike polo.

I don't think poser, but I do become really disappointed. This is probably because I get excited when I do actually see another person riding fixed.

Well what bikes would you be willing to do that to then? I certainly wouldn't do it to a Vigorelli or an Orca...

None lol
Because none of my bikes are trashed or plain enough to justify doing so....
