Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Your Ride Reports - May 2021

If you are new to posting on this thread, or if you are new to cycling, we welcome you! If you are returning from a previous thread, we welcome you, too.

This thread is for anyone who rides a bicycle ... or unicycle, tricycle, tandem, etc.

Are you an experienced road cyclist? Do you bike to work? Do you pull your children to the park? Do you ride weekends? Do you spin at home or in the gym? Is Zwift your thing? Do you race crits, ironman, or centuries? Touring? Audax/Randonneuring?
Or are you just starting out and remembering how much fun you had biking when you were a kid?

There are no set challenges - this is a mixed-ability / mixed-experience / everyone welcome group.

Just pick the target that you would like to achieve this month and post updates throughout the month as you work toward your target. We love seeing photos of your rides and hearing all about them.

Given the current situation many of us will be cycling solo or indoors. Don't feel alone! Share your accomplishments with us.

I was on vacation in the mountains of NC the first week of May. Got in some short hikes. Maybe 9 miles total. Sunday when I got back I did my S. Tampa ride for 42 miles. I also went out last evening for my Davis Is. 27 mile ride.

Saturday did the Picnic to Davis Is. ride. Got a slow leak a little more than half way and had to pump the tire up 3 times, but did 40 miles. Sunday did a repeat ride, but no leaks. Got honked at once, which is a rarity. Impatient jerk. Nice weather, but very windy.

I was in the Ocala Nat. Forest this weekend. Finally got to really use my gravel bike for some non paved road riding. Saturday I went down a packed dirt road I had wanted to try out. Unfortunately, about a mile in they were doing some road work. I was a bit disappointed, but decided to try another road further away. It turned out to be pretty nice. Mostly a mix of loose gravel, packed dirt and grass. I rode around on several stretches. Also unexpectedly encountered some gators on the ditches next to the road. On the way back I found another set of non paved roads. However, I kept encountering private property fences trying to get back to the paved road. I found one overgrown road that morphed into a trail. I finally found my way out of the wilderness to the trail head. 43 miles total of mixed paved/non paved riding. On Sunday I wanted to try some more. I rode to another section of non-paved trail. It paralleled the defunct FL cross canal and eventually came out at a camp ground. Beautiful 40 mile ride.

Bikes: Riding the same unlabelled sketchy AF Craigslist bike bought 20 years ago for $75.00, restoring a Kuwahara Butte 1987 (87067956), Kuwahara Shasta, a hand built Brodie Custom early 90’s, and a bunch of miscellaneous Frankenstein kid bikes

I have been almost nowhere this month other than a couple rides with my boys to increase their distance. Ages 11 and ( and our most recent trek was a 12.1km loop. Both seem to be wanting bike upgrades and customization for the next ride. They want to challenge themselves to go further and explore more.

May 2021 - I did the most mileage in a month than I've ever done in my life up to this point so I thought I'd brag about it a bit here: 697.47 miles (28,035 ft of elevation gain).

The bulk of it came from the last 4 days of the month where I went on a ~400 mile bike tour.

Day 1 - 63.7 mi
Day 2 - 113.5 mi
Day 3 - 124.3 mi
Day 4 - 116 mi

It was a good, long, memorable, Memorial day weekend.

I'm still mostly jogging rather than riding due to neck pain. TBH, I'm probably going to have to give up cycling or switch to a recumbent before long. We'll see how it goes after diagnostics and consults with ortho, etc. All of that stuff was supposed to have been done last year but the pandemic delayed most non-urgent care appointments.

I still can't figure out how to sort through Strava data quickly. Looks like 314 miles total for May 2021. Averaged 43 miles cycling per week, between outdoor rides and indoor trainer sessions. And around 20 miles jogging per week, usually averaging 5 miles per session, three or four times a week.

While my distance is way down from previous years, my total time spent on physical activities is the same, about 45 hours a month.

I had planned to run a solo half-marathon by the end of May, but injured my hip on a 10 mile run in March and never fully recovered. So most of my runs since then have been 3-5 miles, with a once-weekly 7 miler. I'm taking the entire first week of June off, other than walking, so we'll see if things heal up by next week.

And jogging fitness definitely ain't cycling fitness. I did very little cycling from February-April and when I resumed bike stuff in May my legs were dead on climbs that I used to handle fairly well. On the plus side, aerobic fitness is aerobic fitness, so that part does translate.
