Freeway was 95% clean. def going faster than i5 traffic on southbound near lunch time. Traffic looked bad even from the nuke buobs, but we're moving real good in the bike lane w/ slight tail wind. There was one motorcycle v telsa crash and 2 cars ran out of gas we we neared the harbor.

recovery monday ride w/ another century. 115 miles this time up the coast, included some extra cred going up San Juan Creek bike trail I saw from ooga-booja. Cool vibes on that trail. Lunch at the Shwack in Dana Point.

45 min wait to get my base pass but it will be worth it when I used it.

Sunday...Joined a different "coffee ride" group with a good friend. Younger group with all strong riders. Instead of an easy roll to a distant coffee stop, this was a hammer-fest with a coffee break in the middle. I'm not really a fan of that kind of schedule, but it was a tough ride that kicked my ass. The first part of the ride is mostly bike path along the Arroyo and LA River trails, and we spent most of that trading pulls at 25-27mph. After a lengthy coffee break in Kenneth Village (Burbank), things started going uphill through Glendale, Eagle Rock, and into the San Rafael area of Pasadena. I felt decent, but faded hard towards the end and crawled home. https://www.strava.com/activities/7866916748

Tuesday...Happy Hour. Quick, hot, and dirty MTB ride up to Brown Saddle from JPL (Fern Truck Trail) and the quick way down via Rising Hill. Set a new PR on the climb. Had a nice chat with a couple of riders I met on this same ride a couple of weeks ago. https://www.strava.com/activities/7877791754

Rode out yesterday afternoon with a plan to try my new 12-28 cassette on all 5 climbs in my area: (1) Orchard Hills Loop, (2) Portola Parkway eastbound, (3) Shady Canyon Trail, (4) Turtle Rock Drive, and (5) Peters Canyon Trail, but got interrupted by a work phone call and ran out of daylight halfway to climb #5. Barely made it up climb #3 on 34x28, wondering how I managed it before on 34x25; I think my days of riding my 12-25 cassette are over, at least until I lose 15 lbs.

Puttering around the La Habra Hgts - Murphy Ranch area of Whittier. Started in heavy overcast and finished in sunshine. More coyotes out today than riders.
40 miles and 4.8K of climb.

I didn't ride that much this week, mainly because I was putting together a new road frameset. Though I did a short group ride on Saturday, but had to cut it short due to my daughter's morning soccer game. Sunday I had more free time, so I did 25 miles sprinting the LA River bike trail and then climbed up to the Griffith Observatory. Felt good to be riding and the new build feels solid!

Saturday...Solo road ride. I didn't have any plans, or intended destination. I just turned where I felt like turning I ended up on a route pretty different than I've taken before, working my way gradually uphill through Glendale, Montrose, and into La Crescenta, with a long downhill return through La Canada. Steady tempo effort. Legs felt pretty good.

Sunday - MTB group ride on the west side with a couple of guys I started riding with in the early '90s, and another long-time mutual friend. Great ride with lots of climbing, some really fun singletrack descents, and good miles. Despite a little blood and a broken spoke, it was a a really good ride.
https://www.strava.com/activities/7901734720

I am very pleased with the Stan's Podium SRD wheels on my MTB. They are super light (1300g), and ride really nicely. Even with a spoke missing in the rear wheel, the rim stayed pretty true and I was able to finish my ride with zero issues.

Saturday's ride was cut short when buddy hit curb, blew his tire and superman'd into a ditch. RIP bob Pinarello Price. Was supposed to be 95ish mile loop in north San Diego. Spent the rest of the late morning visiting couple bike shops to get ref's for repair and crash replacement from factory. My buddy was super lucky and homerun slide in deep soft sand. Not even his kit had a rip. one small cut on his pinky was the only blood I saw. Literally a foot to the right of his landing spot would have been a cement gutter that was 2 feet lower. Likely broken bones if landed there and more rash. 2 of us Uber'd back to the cars so we can bring back all 5 of us.

Sooooo much flex from the fork and frame from the curb at speed that it blew the top tube like a volcano!!

Sunday's ride was good head clearer. Big group and some shaky wheels so I stayed in the back or in the front after yesterday's ditch adventure. Slightly inland ride through SDBC route but headed north to Carlsbad once we hit the 101 before heading back down south to Torrey Pines parking lot.

There's a local carbon bike builder / repair shop here in LA if the frame is considered a loss. He's posted repair jobs on his Instagram fixing carbon bikes the manufacturer deemed irreparable. I haven't gotten any work done by him, but might be worth a call/message. It'd be a waste to toss a carbon bike if it can be fixed.

I rode about 20 miles today up Arroyo Blvd, Rose Bowl, JPL and through Eagle Rock. I was out riding on 50mm depth carbon disc wheels coming in under 1400g and I probably should have mounted my heavier, shallow depth wheelset instead, because the winds today were blowing me all over the road! If you tied a string to me, I'd probably fly off like a kite!

18 mile lunch ride along 56 bike trail, pretty humid and overcast. First ride on new cranks for the Diverge. Swapped the GRX 46/30 cranks for this quarq 50/34 with carbon arms. Needed more gear inches for paved routes. Also had to swap the front D since the GRX line has offset to them. Mounted Ultegra r8000

I didn't feel like riding the windy flats solo today, so I decided to do 20 miles of hill climbing at my usual favorite spot, Griffith Park! Weather is darn near perfect, except for the wind!

First post-COVID MTB ride. Legs were feeling okay, but my lungs are still a bit wonky. I felt better than expected, though. JPL - Brown Saddle - Rising Hill loop is an hour of riding from my door, with a good climb and a fun bit of singletrack descending. Heading up the paced section behind JPL, before turning onto the climb to Brown Saddle, I came across a local resident. Thankfully, he had zero interest in me, and I made my way past him without even a glance in my direction. https://www.strava.com/activities/7959620737

Whoa, I haven't encountered the bears up in trails yet! Good thing cyclists don't taste very good! I'm in the same boat as you, I'm also in post covid recovery. Thankfully my lungs weren't affected, but I caught it the same time as my family members and we all had varying symptoms. Moving forward though, I'm going to take more precautions NOT to catch it. The downtime is ridiculous. My kid is stuck at home, my wife actually wants to go back to the office and gym, plus I missed a bunch of good group rides!

I've seen bobcats, deer, and assorted rodents, but this was my first bear.

My COVID symptoms were centered around a really bad sore throat. My wife got COVID, too, but hers has been more in her nasal cavities. Last night's ride seemed to help kick out some of the lingering crap deep in my lungs, and they're feeling better today.

Very Cool! Fun fact: The Black Bears in the San Gabriels are the descendents of 11 Yosemite problem black bears that were transplanted back in 1933 to the San Gabriels to replace the Grizzlys that were eradicated.

Glad you are recovering. I was down for about three weeks in January.

Harrahs to Palomar Observatory, Up n Down each grade. In the clouds aka thick fog most the day. Not much traffic on the mt but glad I had a bright rear light so hope they can see me. Coming down South grade back to cars was pouring rain and very cold. Rain drops hitting my eye balls at 35+ mph had a certain sting to it. Glad my contacts didn't fly out. Mental note to spray Rain X on the oakleys

My Diverge on the right and buddy's Tarmac on the left. I was rolling 32c tires. the power meter I just put on was great help today and keeping me from having long efforts in the red

After a non-planned rain ride on Friday, I was hoping for some sun today but it remained cloudy the entire ride.
Due to caregiver responsibilities, I have to ride close to home. Stayed in the Whittier Hills and managed 45 miles and 6.2 K of climb.
Had a 4 point buck cross in front of me on Turnbull Cyn Rd last Sunday but no wildlife today.

hydro disc brakes are SOOOOO clutch for that downhill in the wet and fog, 4200ft decent . I still need to check the pads to see if there is any life left to them
