Greg LeMond To Be Awarded U.S. Congressional Gold Medal

Courtesy of Forbes

“I always felt Greg’s achievement was bigger than cycling,” says Daniel de Visé, author of The Comeback, a 2018 biography of LeMond.

“Congressman Thompson first contacted me last October. He had read my book, and he wanted to find a way to recognize Greg as an American hero.”

A statement from Thompson’s office remarked that Lemond was “one of the greatest American athletes in history.”

Pointedly, Thompson stated that LeMond was the “only American to win the Tour de France” and was a champion of “healthy athletics and clean competition,” unsaid digs against disgraced U.S. rider Lance Armstrong who has stripped of his seven Tour de France victories after admitting to having doped during his career.

“I am truly humbled to be recognized by the U.S. House of Representatives,” said LeMond.

A richly deserved honour. (or honor, in deference. ) Congratulations to Mr. LeMond from "tout le monde"!

Saw that this morning. Long overdue. Wiggo received almost immediate recognition for his achievements.

Wonderful for Greg.
Now, do y'all put your money where your mouth is and boycott Trek for throwing LeMond to the curb in 2008, that is if you haven't been doing so since then.
Anyone for a Trek Demolition Night at Guaranteed Rate Field (nee Comiskey Park) in Chicago on Sep 27-29?
As luck would have it, the Detroit Tigers will be in town to play the White Sox just like they were for Disco Demolition Night in 1979.
Maybe Steve Dahl is available.

Been doing it long before that. Never been a fan. Trek rolled into PDX and promptly decimated the long running not yet C+V LBS network that had been firmly in place for decades. Seemed like it was overnight, half a dozen or so just gone, poof and it seemed like they were the good ones. They were obviously struggling if they folded that quickly but it sure seemed like Trek brought the Death Knell.

My workhorse fix gear is an '83 Trek frame (steel, decent fit and horizontal dropouts) but besides that I have never even considered looking at a Trek. I've hard the same stories of the Trek take-over. (merziac, what year was that?) I owe real gratitude for Bike Gallery but the biggest gifts haven't been sales. (Cycle Oregon mechanical support, turning me on to TiCycles and Colin, the then manager at the Beaverton store telling me about marine grease. Hope you are doing well, Colin.)

Greg Lemond has been saying what needed to be said a long time. Not a good way to climb popularity or prestige or posterity ladders.

1974 according to the BG website and also says the first store was on Sandy a few blocks East of where It's at now. I thought the first Bike Gallery was at 26th? and Broadway in what had been Roth Life Cycles that was part of the PNW Mizutani network but they had been something else before that and had Campy, Cinelli, 3T, Mafac and plenty others in oldschool glass display cases to drool over. Then "poof" they were gone and the bicycle landscape was changed forever.

Plenty of other good came out of all that, Cycle Oregon, CCC, and lots more but that was largely due to people's effort's, Bob, Jay and Allison that was facilitated by Trek's heavy hand like it or not.

I read JPS in college; just couldn't get into him. Maybe I should try again, now that I'm older and I've had a taste or two of... je ne sais quoi... despair? I've been eating a lot of croissants these days, but that can't be it. They are delightful.

Big fan of the Beatles, though! And that cranky old Greg Lemond is pretty cool, too.

Nah, I'm not gonna boycott my LBS that happens to be a Trek dealer. They were a Trek shop long before the Armstrong related scandal. No point harming a local business over something they had no control over. And they're good folks, an old school LBS, a rarity compared with the chain shops.

I don't boycott them, just never buying a new Trek, not my thing, never was. And like I said, the people were fine, they have done a ton of good work.

Has nothing to do with LA, they were all complicite, can't really boycott USPS.

Long overdue in my book.

I was a fan of trek in the late 70s and early 80s when i wanted so bad to tour and couldnt due to family constraints. A trek touring bike represented the ultimate camping machine in my mind. When they got heavy into racing i didnt really care and when they ditched lemond i thought it was awful. I ride a bob jackson nowadays but would ride an old 720 if i got it cheap. Corporations are corporations and they are really only good at producing wealth. I dont give 2 hoots about trek or any other business with the possible exception of Grado in new york.

Greg Lemond however is THE MAN.

It's about time!
He should have gotten these national honors much earlier. Just because he's not as "Publicity savvy" as Armstrong was, people just sort of pushed him aside and gave Armstrong all the accolades.

He was my favorite athlete when I was a kid. For every other kid in my neighborhood it was Michael Jordon, Larry Bird, Dan Marino, Don Mattingly etc etc. I used to cut out pics of LeMond from magazines and newspapers and tape them on my bedroom wall.

Awesome! I was so happy when Greg LeMond got his first Tour! Don't forget Jacques Boyer was the first American professional to ride the 'big one'. Lastly, don't forget Major Taylor!!! It's amazing how unknown he is to this day.

While Jacques Boyer is the first American to compete in the TDF, he pleaded guilty to ten counts of Child Molestation. For me, that takes him out of the running for ANY awards.

On topic, good for Greg LeMond! A true champion, gentleman and worthy of admiration.
