I'm more of a cat man myself, but when my mother-in-law passed away, we inherited her Scottish Shepherd. She herded our cats for more than eight years. Not very successfully, but it was fun to watch. The green pillow was hers, obviously.

My "Bumper" - She lived 15 years and seven days. - Collie/Shepard mutt. I miss her dearly. She was not that smart, didn't do tricks, but was a very attentive pack member who protected the home with a powerful bark and a big toothy snarl if need be. Loved to ride in the car, went deaf at about age 11 but did very well with hand signals.

And "Henry" the neighbor dog. He lives across the street but he's my buddy and I take care of him when the neighbors are out of town. He is a Pit/beagle mix. The vet was kind and on record he is a "Beagle mix" - He has a beagle-like "barooo" bark that is not very loud. Runs around sniffing the ground just like a beagle.

Mr. Dog in the first year of his retirement.

His name is Trent, and his racing name was Special Trent. And he is "special." I had all these great pix of him checking out my Trek 720 when that came home- his ears were back and his tail was between his legs- he had no idea what to make of the strange machine. I'll have to go to a backup for those- Thanks Image****.

And here's a more recent pic of us together- more gray in the muzzle, but still all sweetness. We're lucky to have him.

Three year old Dempsey is a Tennessee Treeing Hound that we adopted from the shelter when he was a pup. We arrived late on adoption day and dozens of dogs had already found homes including his two siblings. Dempsey was a small cowering pup that was in a cage next to the enclosure of two massive, barking pit bulls. I suppose his frightened demeanor scared other potential owners away but we knew we found our dog. An incredibly intelligent, fast, nimble and affectionate being who is the best buddy of our other little one. Only squirrels and rabbits must proceed with caution around our brindle companion.

Adept guard dog

Efficient gardener

Lover of bean bags

Best friends

The center of attention in our family is Ezzie, a 9-lb Papillon, who's now seven-years old.

She isn't crazy about other dogs, is fairly scared of our cat (for good reason--the cat gave her a nice cornea scratch a few years ago), but she absolutely loves people. She's really smart and is actually an excellent hiking dog. She stays on the trail and needs to lead, but she always checks to make sure we're close by.

Brodi is a mini retriever. We just picked him up today and so far he is a bit shy, but super sweet.

This shot has to be about 35 or 40 years old, back when I actually had some hair.

This is the late, great Charley. We rescued him and had him for about 14 years. He passed on in February.

This little guy is named Oscar. We've had him for about a month now.

For those of us who have lost beloved canine companions, Lord Byron's tribute to "Boatswain" can't help but strike a resonant chord.

Lord Byron - Memorial to Boatswain

Near this Spot
are deposited the Remains of one
who possessed Beauty without Vanity,
Strength without Insolence,
Courage without Ferocity,
and all the virtues of Man without his Vices.

This praise, which would be unmeaning Flattery
if inscribed over human Ashes,
is but a just tribute to the Memory of
BOATSWAIN, a DOG,
who was born in
Newfoundland May 1803
and died at Newstead
Nov. 18, 1808.

When some proud Son of Man returns to Earth,
Unknown to Glory, but upheld by Birth,
The sculptor’s art exhausts the pomp of woe,
And storied urns record who rests below.
When all is done, upon the Tomb is seen,
Not what he was, but what he should have been.
But the poor Dog, in life the firmest friend,
The first to welcome, foremost to defend,
Whose honest heart is still his Master’s own,
Who labours, fights, lives, breathes for him alone,
Unhonoured falls, unnoticed all his worth,
Denied in heaven the Soul he held on earth –
While man, vain insect! hopes to be forgiven,
And claims himself a sole exclusive heaven.

Oh man! thou feeble tenant of an hour,
Debased by slavery, or corrupt by power –
Who knows thee well must quit thee with disgust,
Degraded mass of animated dust!
Thy love is lust, thy friendship all a cheat,
Thy tongue hypocrisy, thy heart deceit!
By nature vile, ennobled but by name,
Each kindred brute might bid thee blush for shame.
Ye, who behold perchance this simple urn,
Pass on – it honours none you wish to mourn.
To mark a friend’s remains these stones arise;
I never knew but one -- and here he lies.

My German Shepherd. She is 6 years old and incredibly smart. She can open a door with a turn handle, bring her leash when she needs to go "outside", has 33 separate verbal commands, many sign commands, well trained and obedient.
She was meant to be police dog but the gun fire spooked her too much.

The old guard, Quinto and Rufus, both street rescues from Merida. The three of us have recently become greybeards.

The new blood, Maximo and Hotdog, sibling walkons here in Tixkokob.

It seems like a natural fit for this group. Thin frame, light weight, fast, and no longer wanted by their former owners because they aren't as good as the new ones.
