I've tried it and was pleased with the results. Like Duke7777 says, it pays to go around a second time. I didn't, but came to the same conclusion, and will do so next time.

Used a gold pen for the lugs and to separate the chrome from the paint.

Thank you! It is a Japanese frame built by Miki for the Union Sapporo model. It took a long time to decide what to do with it, but in the end it turned out to be the best €5 I ever spent. Here is what it looked like before the repaint.
