I've tried it and was pleased with the results. Like Duke7777 says, it pays to go around a second time. I didn't, but came to the same conclusion, and will do so next time.
Used a gold pen for the lugs and to separate the chrome from the paint.

gold sharpie permanent marker used . Very happy with result.
