WTB: 1983-84 Lotus Pegasus ATB

This is a sentimental quest. The Pegasus was my very first mountain bike, and I made a lot of great memories on it while stationed at Marine Air Station El Toro in So. Cal. during the `80s. I would like to buy a 19 or 21-inch frameset or complete bicycle, if anyone out there has one to sell.

No. It should be called Lotus Unicorn, I think.

Trying Again, It's Been Over a Year

It's getting close to Christmas, so I thought I should give this another try.

Please NOTE: I have a lot of interesting bikes, and I would be willing to trade almost any of them straight across for a 21" Pegasus in good condition. Or we can discuss price. Alternately, if you only have a frameset in good condition, I would be interested in that as well. I'm sure we could negotiate to both our satisfaction.

Was this bike made, like most early 80’s OTS MTBs, in Japan? Could one find such a frame with rough paint, strip it, and repaint/decal as a Lotus? I know for many this is close to heresy, but sometimes you just have to glue the horn on a horse…

Yes, the `80s Lotus bikes were made in Japan. No offense intended, Dave, but count me among the "heresy" faction here. I have no issue with customization, but counterfeit is another matter entirely.

However, the Pegasus is uniquely immune to this type of treatment because of a signature frame design feature. I am posting a copy of somebody else's photo here (From The Paceline forum) to illustrate:

Back before suspension bikes, there were some deadfalls across singletrack that you simply had to stop and carry the bike over. This thoughtful shoulder-tube helped a lot with that, and any other time you had to hoist the bike, like carrying it upstairs to the third floor of the barracks you happen to live in. I've never seen this on another bike.

None taken, and please understand, none meant from me either. Thanks for sharing the photo - that’s a cool frame!

"Portage Straps" we called them. A short-lived item from the early/mid eighties.

You can just make out the braze-on fittings for them on these two Rock Lobsters from that era.

I've had this model on alert for years and only once did one surface. It was a fairly awful shade of brown and thankfully, way too small for me. These really are difficult to find but, where there's a will, there's a way.
Stay the course DQ!

Are you still searching for a Pegasus? It's not local to me but I just saw this one pop up on FB marketplace.
