Cassette 10/42 and double crankset compatibility
Good afternoon I have two questions.
The first: It is possible to use a double crankset with the 42/22 configuration, and a 10/42 (11v) cassette.
The second: Is it possible to modify this cassette by removing teeth and leaving it at 10/36? I have read that it is difficult in the cassette of 10/42

I do know if you are able to install a 10-42 and you can't use the 42t cog you can just adjust the limit screw on the rear derailleur to not travel to that cog.

I don't know what rear derailleur you are using but I have a 40/30 crankset with a 11-36 cassette using a XT 10-speed mountain bike rear derailleur.

Seems a waste of a good cassette, but I did see Jeff from Worldwide Cyclery (YouTube), chopped off the 42t off a XX1 cassette because he is a weight wiennie. If I remember he wanted the gold drive train. They used to dremel to cut off the 42t...

On my 11-40 cassette the last gears are all connected. I don't think you can easily remove it.

You won't find a RD with a 52T wrap capacity. Most RDs that can handle a sprocket larger than a 36 are 1X and don't need more than 42T of wrap, for a 10-52. An MTB might use a 34 with a 10-52. A 22/34 ratio is about the same.

You can run a 10-42 in a 2x configuration - check out this video showing the details.

The combo you are asking about, though, has 20t difference in front and most front derailleurs nowadays are made to handle 16 to 17 tooth jumps. 20 might shift but then as DaveSSS mentions you are really maxing out the capacity of the RD to eat up chain.
