Shimano cassette lock-nut question
11 spd Shimano lock nut is label "11 spd only"
.Will this lock nut cause a problem on a 10 spd Shimano casstte?
The Sram locknut does not specify a spd.

I don't think you'll be able to engage it on a 10 speed cassette.

Shimano probably has a reason. I doubt it's a conspiracy to make you buy more lock rings. Even if you have to buy the entire cassette to get one, that doesn't sound like something that's going to make Shimano much money.
Even if it fit and seemed to hold everything securely, I'd probably still replace it with the correct lock ring when I could get one.

I think the only difference is either the outer diameter of the ring or the thickness, can't recall which. One or the other was to accommodate 11 speed or 11 tooth cog.

It is thread length.
11t cogs sit further out so you need more threads on the lockring. There might be a diameter issue, but I’m skeptical of it as I’m running a 1st position 14t cog for an 11 speed CS-6800 with an 11t lockring.
If it torques without the threads going too deep, you shouldn’t have an issue.

Thanks for responding.
Using a 10 spd cassette with the 1.85mm washer, proper thread engagement, and torqued down per spec.
If there is no play in the cassette I should be ok.

I'm using that exact combination on a Shimano 11-speed freehub body. A 10-speed Shimano cassette and the 1.85mm spacer with the OEM 10-speed lockring and it torqued down properly with no play or movement. It has worked fine for several thousand miles.
