grip shifter choice

When we bought our DaVinci Grand Junction, we had the down turned bars it comes with changed out for straight bars. The shifters were changed to SRAM Centera 9-Speed Twist Set. We had a LBS replace the shifters in late 2018 with another SRAM Centera 9-Speed Twist Set. The gear indicator on the right shifter did not work fro the beginning. It's not a big deal, but not ideal either. This morning, the ball on the end of the right shifter cable came off and we lost the ability to shift. So, if we have to replace the shifter cable, we might as well replace the shifter with one where the gear indicator works.

My question is whether there is anything better than the SRAM Centera 9-Speed Twist Set we have been using that we should consider.

Thanks.

I would ditch the grip shifters and get some trigger style shifters they are much more reliable and durable

Are you dead set on having that long plastic window with the little red indicator? In general that type of design is prone to failing. In fact I have a broken one right now on my tandem left shifter which is not even that large (cheap Shimano trigger shifter).

If you are intent on staying with grip shifters, then the ones I suggested above should solve your problem. They avoid the whole issue with that window by simply printing the numbers directly on the housing. Nothing to fail.

Good luck with your replacement.

I think thehttps://www.rei.com/product/737409/s...er-set-8-speed only comes as an 8-speed model.

Ah I did not see you mentioned 9-speed above. Unfortunately there aren't many options in twist grip for 9 speed for a Shimano rear derailleur.

Most people run trigger shifters on 9 speed and above.

The only other one I can find is this, but not sure it will shift as well as the one you have already: https://www.microshift.com/en/product/ds85-9/

I got the right grip shifter replaced with a SRAM Centera 9-Speed Twist shifter. For anyone who reads this and then tries this for the first time, take pictures of all connecting points before removing the old cable and shifter. As soon as you pull out the old cable, a number of parts fall out and it can be hard to be sure exactly how they fit without a picture. Also, hang onto your old shifter in case you need to look at the insides to see how parts are aligned. The little metal piece on the inside of mine popped out. Without looking at the inside of the old one, I may not have been able to figure out how that piece fits in there. Once you see how everything fits together, it's not that hard to run the new cable and get the shifter back together. Just make sure you order a longer (3100mm) cable with the shifter, because the cable that comes with the shifter will be too short for a tandem.
