CCM TdC Restoration Advice Sought

Hey everyone - I am am doing a restoration on this CCM Tour du Canada. I am a little nervous about effing things up, even though I have some experience. I am looking for your help.

I have given the frameset a good cleaning and soak in Oxalic acid which has removed any exposed rust. The previous owner used touch-up paint over some surface rust spots. I gently wiped those areas with acetone and had some success removing touch-up paint (but not all). I am giving it another soak in oxalic to get at the newly exposed areas.

I believe the original paint and decals are good enough that I want to preserve them. Anyone out there have any thoughts or experience with this colour? I want the touch'ups to colour match 99%+.

Any thoughts about colour match, other restoration tips are welcome. Should I touch up bare spots with etching primer first, for instance? EDIT: any sources of replacement hoods for the Universal brake levers?

I think that you should only do what you can to preserve this frame. I imagine that wax would do a good job, but maybe a clear coat that is compatible with the existing paint would be better at keeping rust at bay.

I have nothing to offer with regards to the Universal brake hoods.

I think if you want to retain the decals you may wish to simply arrest the rust and not try touchup.....there's enough paint damaged that touchups will likely look worse than patina. Up to you though.

Have you joined/posted on the vintage ccm forum? Lots of help available there.....

Haha! onyerleft, I may be more fussy about bike fit than you. This 23 inch frame has a 57cm top tube. My prefererred TT length is 58cm so I am installing a 115mm stem thanks to pstock . T-Mar , if you can find a 24 inch frame for me, I would consider a swap. Thanks to Paul Waque for jumpstarting this thread.

As I recall, this bike has a bit of an ownership history and and unusual paint colour. I think that this bike is more interesting with the original paint and patina than a repaint.

Ready to ride!

So after a lot of consideration, I kept the original paint ... patina, dings and all. Parts were cleaned and lubricated, installed and dialled. Changes I made included reverting back to Flamme Tubulars and finding, polishing and installing a 115mm matching stem. Currently running a 7 speed freewheel but I think I may have to limit my range to 6 speed as the trim on the front derailleur is not great and I am gettiing some chain rubbing in low gear. Other than that, the bike performed well on a 40 Km ride roday with a short stop for a photo-op at Trout Lake near North Bay, ON. As T-Mar has suggested this bike is smaller than I prefer. It is the 23 inch frame and I certainly would fit better on the 24 inch frame. If anyone out there has the 24 inch TdC and wants the 23 inch TdC, I might be game for a trade. Highly unlikely but now its out there! Happy riding.
