Nishiki Custom Sport SS 20 lbs

After getting some nice tires Hitchomson pro comps for $2 early this week I found a nice super light Bontrager Saddle at the local thrift store for $2 so my big frame old high carbon steel Nishiki is now down to 20lbs and change. With the current tires and Mavic CXp-10 laced to STX hubs with light tubes it does have about the lightest wheel set possible for a vintage bike.

Looks great and appears to have a nice relaxed geometry for easy riding.

I wish the fixie kid I know would put brakes on the darned thing!

Under 20 pounds with a fender and reflectors is great.

I see you are running it as a 3 speed. Do you just move the wheel in the drop out to change gears depending on the ride?

Don't think it's a 3 speed...it's got a QR on the rear. No Indicator chain, etc.

He's got three cogs on the back wheel.

That's what happens when you don't look at all the pics

Philosophically, is it a three speed or 3 single speeds? I'd run a downtube shifter and a derailleur for less than 500 grams weight penalty but it ain't my bike.

Hmm, if I never change gears on my 2 x 10, is that bike a single-speed?

Nah you would just be like most bike riders who almost never shift which is why they need 2 x 10 in the first place . . .

Yes I set it up that way on a cassette so I could get a nice chain line and a several gear choices.

Back in the good old days, real men shifted by guiding the chain by hand while backpedaling (rear cogs) or pedaling gently forward (chainrings). If you keep the chain somewhat slack and have a tight progression of gear teeth, it can be done.

I am with you, but then I am the guy who converted a Swedish track bike, complete with track dropouts, to a 4-speed by machining a rear derailleur claw to mount backward.

The reason I built the bike up this way is I was just using the parts I had on hand or happened to come by locally for cheap or free after wearing out the previous set of wheels tires gravel grinding.. The cassete is nice because it is lighter and bit more crisp and study than a freewheel and as said gives me three gearing options.and with the nice triple converted to single crank set I have a tone of front chain ring options ranging from the mid 20's to mid 50's if I ever want to change things up.
