Semi-serious suggestion: No dogs

I suggest that the topic of dogs should be verboten for the same reasons as the topic of guns is. I don't know if anyone is keeping statistics, but there seem to be a disproportionate number of bannings occurring every time dogs pop up as the topic of a thread. I won't try to assign blame for this, but it invariably seems to be the case that a discussion that involves militant dog lovers vs. people that have been injured by dogs or know someone who has been severely hurt by a dog while riding always breaks down into irrationality.

Or, in the alternative, it could become an A&S sticky topic like helmets, all dog threads to be merged into it.

Geesh, there was a dog topic recently somewhere here on BF that I missed! Please don't point it out. I'm glad to have missed the entire conversation.

No dogs?

Can't argue with that idea.

The dog days of summer are over so I'd wait to see if it remains an issue.

I’ve suggested that it be made a sticky at least twice. Like helmet threads.

Many of us ride on rural roads and encounter loose dogs from time to time.

It may well be useful to share coping techniques, hopefully without injury to cyclist nor injury to the dogs.

Not everyone on this forum has been here for decades, what may seem beat to death to some may be a new critical safety issue to others.

That would be fine, except these dog chase threads invariably are disasters where all that is exchanged is accusations and insults (and gun talk). I also happen to think that discussing techniques to deal with something that by its nature is unpredictable is unlikely to be terribly enlightening. I don't have anything but my intuition to support this, but I'd bet the vast majority of injuries from dog attacks on cyclists occur before the rider is aware there's a dog there.
