Old Basso

I have an old Basso bike from my dad and I'm not sure anything about it. Unfortunately I can't post pictures until I have 10 posts so I'm sorry if I spam to get my 10 posts. Can someone please help me and let me know what I have and what is worth?

Thanks

If you upload them they go to your library and someone can post them. In the meantime, you can describe the colors and such.

Pretty sure it’s a Gap, a really nice bike. I had one like that, only smaller. Beautiful paint job. Rides great. I’m not sure what they are bringing now, but they were undervalued a few years ago.

Don’t know much about Basso but when I see a Columbus sticker and Campagnolo Super Record, I assume higher end. Not as collectible as the premier Italian makers. Mismatched wheels also take away from the potential value of this bike. I consider this bike to be similar to a Campy SR equipped Olmo. $600 +/- $50 is where I see it. Maybe $750-$800 cleaned, tuned and with matched wheels.

I have ridden this bike a few times and it is a very smooth ride. The glue in tires suck to deal with though. I believe I posted more pictures in my library but an unsure. Does anyone know the best way to sell this bike?

Best way as in most $$ or best way as in easiest? The easiest ways yield the least money and the most involved ways yield the most.

Most equals clean it all up, dismantle and part out on eBay. Easiest is sell locally, C/L or FB marketplace. In my market, local sale as is = about 1/4 estimate above. 50/50 chance person buying will then clean it all up and part it out.

Realize repairing will take extra $$ and time. Parting out is actually less work IMO and you don't spend money on parts and consumables.

If you want to sell this bike complete, to maximize $$ the wheels have to match and it needs good tires. Unless you can handle installing tubular tires, this means finding clincher wheels. A nice set of wheels used might cost $100 to $150, even used tires can cost $25 each, tubes, etc. You will never get the $$ in parts and time back in the selling price.

Maximum $$ selling means sell hubs as a set, then stem, bars, seat post, RD, FD, brake calipers as a set, brake levers as a set, bottom bracket, DT shifters as a set, crankset, pedals. and finally frame/fork/headest. Thats 12 auctions, maybe 13 if you try to sell saddle. Could be $1200 total, could be more. Chances of selling whole for $1200? ZERO.

That’s a Basso Gap when they were the top dog at Basso.

As is, in a normal market, that might get $250.

Clean it, new tape, cables, tires and chain and you MIGHT find someone at $500.

Uhmmm..I think $250 is way too low an estimate. Such a bike with these components (Super Record) should start at $500 and go up from there, if it is properly, touched up, cleaned up and serviced.
BTW, always check if the pivot bolts on the rear Super Record derailleur is attracted to magnets or not. If not, they could be titanium pivot bolts and could add close to a 100 bucks to the derailleur's value, if it is in VG condition.

Depends on if he lives in a more bikie market. I would be tempted at $500, but it doesn't present well in my opinion. Clean it up and sell it whole and I think the market gets better. I know here, no one is touching that over $300...they just are not interested. In a bustling market, you are likely correct and I am way off!

Sell it piecemeal, cleaned up, and he will likely get 350 for the frame alone, and probably well over $1000 as a part out on eBay.

Nor do I. What is the stuff around where the seatpost enters the seat-tube?

Firstly, it is a beautiful bike that someone who wanted a Basso would pay very well for if it was completely intact and cleaned up a bit. Then the $500+ is completely possible.

Secondly, though, a lot of buyers will be wanting to flip it, and will offer the $250, maybe 300 I stated above. Or they may offer more and completely tear it down and sell it part by part. That is the way to maximize value of the bike (which for ME is a shame, but I see the reasoning).

You're almost there. Post in the regular C and V forums on a few threads and you will be at #10.

Even search Basso...mine is this one.

With the components, I would just list it on your local Craigslist or Offerup for $700.00 or best offer....

That is a beautiful bike a lovely color scheme. Did you change where the gears are located?

Thank you! Bella was flattered to hear that.

Yes. I bought it as a frame and built it up using more modern stuff (8 speed, with brake lever shifters).
