The Davis Double Century
200 Miles and 8,000 feet of climbing.
05/16/2015

I want this one real bad. I have done 13 Double Centuries but got my first DNF on one last September.
It was just a weird day, got a flat and then later took a wrong turn, I got way behind schedule.

I have 2 real good buddies working with me as a 3 man team for this one.
We will ride the event in support of each other.

Didn't really have any big plans until a few days ago, when with two hours left to register, I threw my name into the lottery for Ride the Rockies, and what do you know, I got selected. Never done the ride, even though I live in Colorado.

But now there's a problem: My wife, who I never, EVER, thought would want to do a multiday ride through the mountains, is annoyed that I didn't ask her to go! So we may switch to Bike Tour of Colorado (also never done) and ride the tandem. I think it could be quite the challenge -- the longest tandem ride we've done together up to now is 50 miles :-)

I am doing PALM. It will be my first. Looking forward to doing it. Looks to be fairly easy at about 50 miles a day. One of the reasons I registered is it is only three hours from my home which is near Indianapolis. I did the MUP & KATY last year. Will also be doing RAGBRAI this year.

Things are falling into place. Like mmichell I'm signed up for ride the Rockies in June, I also made Tour de Wyoming in July, and hotels are reserved for the BRP.

Only one ride for 2015

Hi all,

I have only one ride planned for 2015. I am riding a fat tyre mountain bike across the Simpson Desert in central Australia.

I expect to take between 6 and 8 days depending on conditions. Obviously I am doing training rides but these are all directed at the overall goal of riding the desert.

The total distance is around 500km with the last two days being the most demanding with many, many sand dunes.

Some hardy folks make a race of this in October each year, but I am going when support is available and personal time permits.

I am enjoying reading about others goals and may adapt some of them to my own wishes later in the year.

Best wishes to everyone for their personal challenges. Good luck.

Cheers
Trev

Welcome to the 50+ gang, Trev, that is an ambitious ride you are shooting to complete, best of luck on accomplishing it. A ride report will be nice, when it comes to be.

Tour de Oahe, Pierre South Dakota. I turn 71 in June and this has a 71 mile ride, perfect. A daughter lives there so I am familiar with the area and less than 2000 feet of climbing. Now I only wish for decent temps and low humidity which in June is a lot to ask for in central S D.

Thanks for that link to GOBA; it was an enjoyable read. I've met a couple of GOBA riders and it sounds like a fun, down-home Midwestern event (to this Michigan native).

Since this thread was bumped up on March 7, from February 1, I'll add this previous announcement for a Seventh Fifty-Plus Forum Annual Ride on the weekend of October 9-11 in Pennsylvania. See this thread:

"Fifty-Plus Ride in Pennsylvania - October 9-11"

Several Fifty-Plus subscribers have expressed an interest.

PBP in August

Couple full SR series with the goal of R60 and although I know I won't/can't ride the 600K in under 24H, it is a goal.

le 1000 Du Sud.

I had been thinking about doing the Natchez Trace Century and the Bike Ride Across Georgia (BRAG). I looked at my calendar and found out I have something else going on the weekend of the Natchez Trace Century. I just found out that Alabama's Magnificent Bike Adventure is staging out of Huntsville this year so I think that I will probably replace BRAG with AMBA. I am also thinking about doing the Tour de Nash metric century.

So far, I've ridden in three of the four planned events I've had for this year. Three of them came and went in March:

Haleakala Crater - 10,000 feet, the upper half of it through rain.
Solvang Century - cut to 70 miles due to 90 degree temps.
Fargo Street Hill Climb - one of the two steepest streets in Los Angeles

One more to go, in April, the Chico, California, Wildflower Century. Then I'm at liberty for the rest of the year.

Ah, you rode Haleakala. I've not done that one yet, but it is definitely on the list!

I've driven to the top, though ... somewhere along the way, my wife quipped:

"You really wish you were riding up this thing, right?"

She also correctly surmised that I would abhor the notion of descending Haleakala with one of those tour groups. I'd feel bad for not earning the descent, and the pace would drive me nuts.
