Suntour fd experts wanted

I have a circa1988 Suntour FD that shifts alright yet it seems to be missing something.
It looks to me like there should be some kind of shoulder for the cable to wrap around, as the current angle of the shift cable to the lever is quite severe.

What for?

That was probably for a cable housing stop. Quite a few SunTour front derailleurs had them, or at least had provisions for them. Someone else probably has photos at hand, but all I've got is a Cyclone with a hole for the missing cable housing stop...

Yep^^

There is a stop that slides right into that little notch. Handy if your frame has stops rather than guides. I have one here. I'll post a pic later.

I'll add that was the era when they changed the routing of the cable from a guide over the bottom bracket (usually with a housing stop on the derailleur) to a guide under the bottom bracket (with no housing from the downtube shifter location). If memory serves, Suntour sold FDs with removable stops so they could be installed either way. Finding the long separated stop, if you need one, is virtually impossible.

Alright. I have a few minutes before I have to run out. Here is the stop.

It is hard to tell from the angle, but it looks like your derailleur may be mounted a bit high, which could impact shift performance.

Wow, I think I have a small drawer full of those stops. They came in a cabinet of spare parts about 10 years ago from a bike shop that downsized. I have always wondered what they were!

On the cyclone, one can also thread a cable stop in. I have one that is for a rear brake cable hanger with a built in QR. I didn’t use it, but should work fine. I am using a VX front instead.

So you're the guy!

Joking aside, I can't remember for the life of me where or when I got that stop. But I do recall that one day as I was building a frame with a FD so equipped, it occurred to me that the mystery stop was for just that purpose.

fify

I had never noticed the slot before. Today, I see that the SunTour XCM front derailleur on the Cannondale I just bought has the slot. Pulling a SunTour XCD out of the parts bin, where it's been for years -- yep, there it is. The SunTour XC on my Sequoia? Sure enough. Hiding in plain sight!

Thanks. Luckily I don't need the part.

Well, what I have isn’t exactly that piece, but one that looks to be for a similar application:

Anyone have an idea what these might fit?

Hmm, might make a neat slotted brake cable housing stop, if the slot is wide enough for a brake cable...

In a pinch, it looks like you might be able to make one of these work:

I remember those. Called "hollow molars", they were often used on moped brake levers.

That might work. You also might be able to take the vertical piece (for lack of a better way to describe it) and drill it half way with a 4/5mm bit to make a stop.

In a front derailleur installation that uses a cable housing, one can always route the housing under the BB shell and let the derailleur end dangle. Works like a champ, and no one notices.

Amazing! The most obscure random mystery stuff and someone on the forum seems to know exactly what it is so quickly.

Awhile ago, I was looking for just a part or solution for a Cyclone front and came to an older post in the mechanics sub forum. I just added a possible solution there for future reference for others.

that solution is quite good! Those rear brake QR hangers can be very handy. Are they common enough to be an easy solution? i.e. are they more common that SunTour derailleurs that still have the cable stop? TBD, I suppose.
