Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Yes, Hidden Springs Cafe. On Angeles Forest Hwy just before Upper Big Tujunga, near that fire station. The fire station is still there and you can get water there.

Newcomb's Ranch was closed all last year and recently re-opened, but I don't know what days. When we first went there it was just the one building on the left, (as you face it) and the food sucked and the whole thing was pretty run-down. The doctor bought it and dumped a butt-load of money into it. Sometimes it's a great place to go and sometimes it sucks and they ignore cyclists. Depends on who is working there that day.

Spent a few hours there drinking Cokes and eating fries before the last few climbs on the way back down.

Hidden Springs - that's right. Thank you. I rode Lower Big T a couple of weeks ago, but haven't been on the section of AFH with Hidden Springs for almost 20 years. I haven't been to Newcomb's in about the same length of time.

I don't think that.

I think he got a slap on the wrist and is on a hunger strike. Metaphorically speaking, of course.

Here is a pic of me going into Newcomb's and you can see the taller part of the building to the left, that was the whole thing 30 years ago. The rest was all added on by the doctor, who passed a couple years ago. I think his sons run it now? This pic was probably 2005 or so, because I was on the CAAD5.
btw, How was lower Big Tujunga? Have they worked on it at all? Last summer it was like a bombed out road, nothing but potholes, cracks, and broken asphalt.

Confirmed with the first repair guy who called back, who said a half day minimum and more in a confined space, which is what we have. Looks like Tuesday is New Washer Day. At least we'll upgrade to a cheap front-loader.

...not to mention choucroute garnie, sauerbraten, cassoulet, roasted vegetables of various kinds, all starting with a little bacon or equivalent.

My test saddle arrived. B17 Imperial. Generally speaking, the B17 is too wide, and the one I have I've modified to B17 Narrow specs. But with the cutout and the skirt strings it might be doable. I have a year to find out. The leather is at least as thick as the old one, so that's a good sign. Still made in England, but shipped from Italy.
The knee is about to be put through its paces.

I'm gonna see what I can get by cleaning the rims and sanding the pads. That worked wonders for the Cannondale with the new wheels, which have similar rims to the Circuit (Trek Sonic vs Wolber something-or-others)
