Hopefully stupid Garmin speed sensor setup question

Hi all,

I bought a Garmin speed sensor 2 to get speed/distance for use on the turbo trainer, added it to my GPS (Forerunner 35) and then from Garmin Connect to set the wheel size. Did my first run today and on completion I ended up with 2 cycles logged, one about 5 seconds and 0.5km longer than the other, and in viewing them in Connect it shows 1 Forerunner and 2 speed sensors under the devices.

So have I set it up wrong? Is the fact the sensor is registered with both the device and the app causing it to count both separately?
Will I lose the tyre size configuration if I remove it from the app?

Many thanks.
