Recomendations for inexspensive Single Speed Freewheel.

Well I thought I would ask the guys here in the C&V forums since you seem to have the most knowledge. I'm looking for an inexpensive SS freewheel option for my winter beater conversion. The dicta that came with the wheels I got cheap basically free just stopped working freewheel in both conditions after only few days of tough cold weather riding. Stange thing is when i took it inside for reapair and warmed it up it started working. It doesn't have to be super smooth or fancy just rugged and dependable for cold weather riding. I put a different wheel on the bike for know with another dicta but I don't have a lot of faith. I wish they still made the old school Suntour BMX freewheels I raced and road the same one daily for 4 years no problems.

When I rode BMX fifteen years ago, I really liked the ACS Claws freewheels. They were good quality and not overpriced. I think they're still in production.

It freezing up in cold weather is probably a result of the kind of oil that's on the pawls. If you disassemble your Dicta, degrease it, and put it back together with appropriate light oil on the pawls, it'll probably work just fine after that.

Funny I would have recommended DICTA as that's what I use and has never failed me sorry I can't help.

Well it could just be that this freewheel is worn out it came with a used set of wheels I got at the bike coop. I just thought that since I will likely buy a replacement there might be something better in than the the Dicta in a low cost freewheel.

I've got a cheapy Taiwanese/Chinese/some-other-mass-produced-Asian-build freewheel on one side of my fixed gear bike. It's loud, but after three years and about 800 miles (I ride fixed mostly), I haven't had any problems - snow, salt, sand, rain, and daily commuting with daily warm-up cycles (that theoretically draws in moisture when it cools again), and it has never failed, and has never had any odd behavior.

I've never oiled it either.

Well since you guys seem to think the Dicta stuff is fine I will just beat on the bike with the other wheel and freewheel for a while and see how it goes. It will just look kinda lame till I get around to rebuilding or buying another freewheel. It is a winter beater bar bike after all.

I've used a Dicta with no problems, as well as Shimano, which seems to have better build quality. I just got an Everest. Never tried one before but some of the folks in the SS/FG subforum liked them, and the price was pretty good, around $20 shipped. Seems like a pretty solid unit, but I've hardly ridden it.

Having built a number of SS bikes, I have found that about 3 out of 4 of the cheaper ones have annoying clicks. As a result, I have gone to White Industries freewheels. Expensive, yes, but about the same price as getting one cheaper freewheel that doesn't click.

I have an ACS claws on mine (and I think my daughter's). Neither freewheel has given me any problems.

+1

The clicks drive me crackers on the cheapos.

I still use them, but switching to the White on my super secret city bike project.

There are some Chinese ones for $2 at my LBS. They just have 2 little holes in the side for unscrewing, which seems rather flimsy, but the salesman explained that by the time you need to remove them you can just throw the whole wheel away.

Shimano is good and fairly inexpensive. I have experimented with cheaper ones but they always seem super loud.

The OP probably doesn't need to disassemble it. Just work a bunch of fresh oil into it, let that mix in, and wipe up whatever dribbles out.
