Well, what can I say.. Coming full circle in the next few months...
You guys might remember my post about my gf leaving, and selling my bikes. Back a month or so when I was pretty torn up emotionally, I decided to contact my ex in Houston(You know the place where I mention something is in the garage in Houston?) Well, we have been talking all this time, and in about 6 months, I will most likely be moving back to Houston to be with her permanently. She really was an amazing woman, and why I ever left is beyond me. I thought the grass was greener, and it was only astroturf and plastic flowers... I have truly learned my lesson, and I know where I belonged all along. That she would even consider talking with me again, is in itself astounding. But I guess it proves you can fix stupid after all,. Anybody got Ron Whites number?
I will probably hit the flea markets again, that goes without saying. All but the really special stuff I will pass on to new owners. My tastes have changed as far as that goes. I will only keep the really nice one's I run across, and sell the rest. I will still be selling my bikes once I get to Lafayette on the first of February, and anything I post on CL in Laf, I will also post here to give you guys a crack at it as well. What I need most of all right now, is a newer non gas guzzling vehicle, so I can visit her in the coming months. In order to do that I will sell my truck as well. It's a trusty but battle worn 86 ramcharger with a 5.9 liter. About 8-10mpg on a GOOD day.,,,,BD

I need something with a bed on it, obviously, but I have been considering a Jeep. I hear they can be expensive to maintain though?,,,,BD

The 5 is still on the first engine after 165,000 miles. Clutches and pressure plates up the wazoo though.
Spendy at that.
Sits in town at the family house in Ely, MN.
Whoever goes up there uses it and pretends they like it.
The 7 blew a rod after 43,000 miles. My wife hated it.
Wrecked her hairdos when the top was down.
Off the red CJ7 went and was replaced by a Landcruiser.
I sold that with 190,000 on it and I still see that in our neighborhood eight years later.
So, go Landcruiser I would say.

I work On JEEPS. Stay away from them. Dodge trucks are nice, they're big, and not so good on gas. Two door trucks are easier to handle, four door trucks seem like buses.

+10 Forget Jeeps. My wife really likes her Honda Element. Typical Honda quality, same drivetrain as the Honda CRV, nice bicycle hauler to boot.
Congrats on the turn around! Sounds like a terrific move!!

I'm not sure i ever knew this! My daily driver is a full size bronco. Gas prices leave some to be desired, but it is one of the cleanest sub 3k vehicles I've ever seen that has working 4wd and AC. As an added bonus, the few parts I have needed for it were available localy, even in small town Iowa.

I was thinking of something along the lines of a Nissan Frontier, maybe a Ranger, but the seats don't go back far enough on a regular cab Ranger. I've driven a couple of Rangers 1984, 2005, and a 2010, all regular cabs. The 84 was the worst on legroom, but the other two weren't a whole lot better. I am 6'1" so me and small pickups don't always mix. There's always the head hitting the upper door jamb thing too, ouch! I drove an 05 Frontier, and didn't seem to have any of those issues. Hopefully I can find a reasonably priced 04-05 model.,,,,BD

Interesting comments on jeeps......my experience was different I guess. Back in '96 I bought a brand new Cherokee with 4.0/auto.....did all my own maintenance and put on 165k trouble free miles. Over the years I put in all new suspension parts to lift it for off roading, added a bunch of other goodies and mounted 33" tires, of the miles driven about 40k was spent off road in some pretty rough places and lots of desert running. It carried my bikes, my kayaks and loads of camping gear. Only thing that actually needed replacing was an oil pressure sending unit.....oh and i even towed a big trailer full of my stuff over 1200 miles.....never any other trouble outside of routine wear items. I found the 4.0 L inline 6 and the AW4 auto and NP231 transfer case to be excellent. Now gas mileage after all my mods, lift and all the extra weight of hd bumpers, a winch, roof rack etc...pretty much was crap at about 10mpg in town, but a stock Cherokee will do way better than that and offer a fair amount of space. Not to mention that they can be had used for very cheap.
Just offering a glimpse of my experience with Jeep Cherokee.....

I have always driven cars w/ average (or lower) reliability records, as reported by Consumer Reports, but have had pretty good luck w/ most of them. Conservative driving and "by the book" maintenance, including expensive vital fluids, help a lot. My wife and I agree that our alltime favorite vehicle is our 2001 VW Passat wagon, which is the perfect size and configuration for our needs.
Best wishes on getting back w/ your ex. I am glad I never went through the separation/divorce thing -- it has been tough on my friends who have.

rangers are terrible on gas, look for a 3.4L tacoma (2001-2004 ish) and make sure it isn't from a salty state (rust!). Mine is a california truck and can get 18 mpg on the highway. If you want better mileage looks for one of the early 90s 2.2re 4 cyclinders. Gutless but you can put a million miles on them with minor maintenance (timing chain every 250K kms)

My Ranger's mileage, for a small truck, is shameful but it has moved a lot of bikes, from there to here, and then to there (a different there)...

My wife's brother in Bayern has a VW Multi-van:

What a great all around box.
Strong mileage and decent performance with the TDI diesel.
Fantastic vehicle for hauling us around with lots of gear including bike racks.
Comfy.
Dull as rocks though as far as styling.
Not theirs but you get the idea!

I am glad to hear your worked things out with your mate. You must have been a good partner to be worth a second chance.
I am in the market for another motor vehicle. I found a decent Cherokee for $1200 and am going to buy it, there are tons of them around here. I would not consider it if I didn't need a 4WD off road vehicle.
I really want an Isuzu NPR with a small box (camper/cargo) on the back that I can convert to 4WD later. I would really like to get my hands on any of the smokers that are imported into South America with mechanical injection. Something for the apocalypse.

I had a Jeep Cherokee with an inline 6 and beat the hell out of it. It rusted out (like every vehicle here in the great salt lake) but wouldn't die.
I finally donated it, and it still ran like a top after 200k+ miles. I never put a dime in it, and it out-lasted THREE of my buddy's Honda CRVs.
I have 2 Gr Cherokees now and my wife and I love them both.

Get a late 1990s Ford Ranger with the extended cab. If you're brave, go with the 4-banger and a 5-speed stick.
You'll get in the high 20s mpg and be able to carry 8 bikes at a time without stacking them.
This truck should cost under $3000.

I second the idea of an older toyota pickup with the 22re. I have one and it rocks. A little slow on the draw sometimes but bombproof.

BD, Good luck with your future.
I sold ny truck because I really wasn't using it as I used to. I now consider that a mistake so I suggest keeping the truck and adding an econo car.
