AT 5,000 kilometers the tire has served you well. Just because you can still a bit of tread does not mean it is not worn out. To my eyes and brain, that tire is plain worn out, even without the gash.

The only thing between you, your bike and the road , is your two tires and a patch of 2cm rubber. Don’t go cheap on tires. Go for safety and peace of mind IMHO.

Just comes down to risk tolerance and level of OCD. Personally I'm ok with riding it with some glue/patch job, but you don't have to twist my arm to convince me to replace it outright (which OP has already done).

Nonsense. If the casing doesn't bulge when inflated, then the casing is not damaged and the structural integrity of the tire is not affected. There is somewhat less protection of the casing in that one particular spot should that one particular spot take another hit, but the difference is small. I have ridden thousands of miles on tires where the rubber of the sidewall has been scraped to the casing with zero issues. That tire is no more dangerous as long as the casing remains solid.

It's a personnel decision each of us makes.
I'd ride it if I was only doing my normal rides. However if I had a organized century ride coming up, or I was going to climb Pike's Peak or some other ride that I felt was important to me, then I'd change a few rides prior.
I've had plenty of flats of all types. Never have any caused the remotest concern for my safety.

if i had to ride another 1,000 to get home, I might try it on that tire. Given an option to swap it out for a new fresh tire, that would be likely a better deal.
