AT 5,000 kilometers the tire has served you well. Just because you can still a bit of tread does not mean it is not worn out. To my eyes and brain, that tire is plain worn out, even without the gash.

The only thing between you, your bike and the road , is your two tires and a patch of 2cm rubber. Don’t go cheap on tires. Go for safety and peace of mind IMHO.

Thanks for the input, everyone!
Perhaps your OCD would rationalize... Buy one tire at a time, move the front to the back, and put the new tire on the front. Always have the best tire on the front. The rear tire wears more quickly, generally. So when the rear is near replacement, you buy one tire. In this way, you get the most out of your tires, you're always safe (best tire on front), and the molecular patterns of the universe seem in order....

Just a thought.

Just comes down to risk tolerance and level of OCD. Personally I'm ok with riding it with some glue/patch job, but you don't have to twist my arm to convince me to replace it outright (which OP has already done).

I have ridden thousands of miles on tires where the rubber of the sidewall has been scraped to the casing with zero issues. That tire is no more dangerous as long as the casing remains solid.

Well, to get home, at a minimum.

Well, the question asked in the post was not whether he could use the tire to get home, but for another 1000km. Hence my response.

It's a personnel decision each of us makes.

I'd ride it if I was only doing my normal rides. However if I had a organized century ride coming up, or I was going to climb Pike's Peak or some other ride that I felt was important to me, then I'd change a few rides prior.

I've had plenty of flats of all types. Never have any caused the remotest concern for my safety.

if i had to ride another 1,000 to get home, I might try it on that tire. Given an option to swap it out for a new fresh tire, that would be likely a better deal.

Not meaning to be snarky here ... but if you're asking then change it. Or them

Because some of us are cheap bastids that want to squeeze every last useful mile out of a tire.
