This has nothing to do with "woke", that's basically always been the law. Right now it's illegal in most places to knowingly sell, possess, dispose and/or transport stolen property with the intent of depriving the rightful owner of the property's use. Do the math here, how many legal options does that leave you with?

Hopefully the next victim of this seller appreciates the social conscience of him not being held accountable. You did the right thing returning the bike, why stop there?

What does this have to do with the mythical wokeness you speak of?

True, disregard my last. I wasn't thinking about that. To be clear though I wasn't thinking of actually letting the person know about police involvement just simply asking for money back and that would be the end of dealings with that person beyond going to police but yeah probably shouldn't be doing that. I just hate bike thieves!

It's amazing how hard some people will work to politicize everything. Is the idea that you can't knowingly keep stolen property controversial?

The problem is that when the thief gets arrested, they may very well lie about you threatening to report them just to get you in trouble. Just not worth the risk.

My advice to clients is that if you intend to call the police on someone, don't talk to that person before you do it, just do it. If they do get convicted, they might get ordered to pay you back the money as restitution.

Reading between the lines, it seems likely that the bike was purchased in a different town than it was stolen from (100 mile drive). From experience, I can tell you that might be the set-up for a runaround as both police departments try to pawn off the case on the other. From the standpoint of getting the bike back to its rightful owner quickly, this might have been the best way to proceed. I probably wouldn't handle it this way, but I'm not going to criticize someone for doing the right thing by the owner.

^^ Most nail-on-the-head response of the whole thread.

In the meantime, the wannabe detectives and attorneys are on the case, even though 98% of the details are pure conjecture.

Thanks for all feedback.
I am a second generation immigrant so I thought it was important to do the right thing. There were different ideas here and I respect them all. The important thing to remember is we're lucky to live in a land where we can talk about this freely. I hope the next time we all talk it's about something less toxic like how to wax your bike or dog owners with those tiny leashes you can't se until th last second.

Lame.

The situation is pretty clear cut, no one is trying to be a detective, and I actually am an attorney. Meantime, really bad display of a wannabe comedy writer.

Went back to my car to think this over,
I checked my phone. I noticed that Bike Index let me Login now. (it didn't yesterday) .

The owner confirmed it and gave me her address and I returned the Bike to her..
I realize there are other solutions, but I wasted two days and a 100 miles on this. This is it for me.
You are lucky no one answered otherwise you might not be typing this foolishness. I know the CRIMINALS might be so misunderstood in some states, but they also might understand you might be a threat to their liberty and well being and give you a beat down for good measure.
