Need help with Gianni Motta ID please.

Greetings-

After a lot of Googling, I've determined that this forum definitely contains the finest collection of vintage bicycle knowledge on the net!

I'm hoping that one of you can help me determine the year and model of a Gianni Motta that I picked up at a garage sale nine or ten years ago. I have a couple of beaters that better suit my riding conditions/style, so this bike has been in storage since I purchased it.

Here are some photos:IMG_4054..JPGIMG_4058..jpgIMG_4057..jpgIMG_4055..jpgIMG_4051..jpgIMG_4056..jpg

I've found several examples of Gianni Motta Personals, but none of them have had internal cable routing like this one.

Any insight or information will be very much appreciated.

Thank you for any help.

-Mark

Yes--not much luck there. Thanks for the suggestion, though!

Does it have the Trans-Tork (sp?) seatstays, making it a Personal 2001, or none, making it a Personal 2000?
I have a Personal 2000, obtained here on BF, stripped but not yet painted.

I've been collecting pics of GMs from ebay, but have not yet sorted through them and have only posted but a few of them here

Here's a great scan of a 1985 catalog showing lots of paint schemes, but not our internal cable routing.

What date code is on your crankset?

Edit: and yours is only the second internal I've seen, after mine.

Here are some you can add to your collection

Indy, Campagnolo Super Record parts indicate that your bike is high end. The rear derailleur is a low end model and most likely a replacement.

Ex Pres-

I'm not sure what a trans-tork (torque?) seatstay is. Here is a picture:

Where can I find a date code? I looked but did not see one.

Thanks!

mainducoyote & Ex Pres--thank you for the additional pics--good stuff.

The trans-tork seatstays are "bent" in above the brake bridge. Easily distinguishable. If it just looks like a normal seatstay then you have a Personal 2000, like mine. From that pic I would guess yours has them.

Here's a pic in the catalog of the T-T seatstay

The date code will be on the back of the crank arm. Should say something like 175 STRADA <4>, with the number in a circle or a diamond. That number will be the date code.

Sorry--I see what you're asking now. Bent seat stays, like this:

seatstays..jpg

My brake bridge is a little different:

Thanks for the tip on the date code. Mine is marked 175 STRADA (circle) 4. Does that peg it as a 1984?

Yours is a Personal 2001. So now I've seen the internal routing on one example of each. And your crank is an '84, so the frame is more than likely an '84 or '85.

And my brake bridge is a little different than either yours or the catalog one.

And I notice most of the catalog bikes have an external fork crown. Mine, like yours, is internal.

Sorry to thread dredge, especially with my first post.

Just picked up a GM frame and I'm trying to figure out what I have. I don't have pics yet, I but can take some soon.

Based on the comment about the seat stays, I have a Personal 2001. But does anyone know what the difference is between the 2001 and the 2001r?

For what it's worth, both chain stays are chromed and seat stays are chromed up to, bot not including the brake bridge. Downtube shifter mounts are in the normal position, not in the "aero" position like the above example. Brake cable along the top tube is internal. Rear spacing is standard 80s 126mm (actually measures out at 127mm). It's unpainted except for a layer of primer. It came with an incomplete decal set that just lists it as a Personal model.

I'd like to do a full restore paint job, accurate decal set and all, but I'm having a heck of a time figuring out exactly what I have. I can't find any markings on any of the cast pieces that would indicate a year or model, but I could simply be overlooking something obvious. Is there a serial number on these frames?

Thanks.

Jack,
welcome to BF. IIRC, the only mark on my BB is the number "31", but I'll have to recheck when I get home. I've seen the 2001 and 2001r designations, but have no idea of the differences (if any).

Did you check out the catalog link I provided above?
Scroll down the page here for another.

You can see the paint scheme I adopted for mine by clicking the pic in my sig below.

The 2001R differs in the employment of newly designed set of microfusion cast fittings. Visibly, the most notable difference is the use of socket style dropouts which the stays and lugs plug into.

Hi Ex Pres,

Thanks for the links. Yeah, I checked and while some of the frames in the catalog have some similarities, I couldn't find an exact match. I'll have another look when I have more time to sit down.

T-Mar, according to your description, mine would be a 2001R, I believe. It has the socket dropout you mention.

I finally got some photos and have 'em up here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/94610026@N07/8615281344/ for your viewing pleasure.

Thanks for the help so far!
