Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Pretty obvious it is Shimano 5800 and the cassette is 6800 but why hide it?

It was necessary in order to maintain their hold on the title "Crappiest Website Ever".

The owner of BD has been here and he thinks his website design is great.

It has "high end" crankset, bottom bracket, brakes and cassette. So sounds like you only get the Ultegra Di2 shifters and derailleurs. Makes sense because they have the same exact bike with full 6800 mechanical for the exact same price

I could be wrong, but I think this gives them the flexibility to use 105 5800 or other "super high end" components if/when they don't have 6800 in stock.

If they aren't telling you that it is 5800 or whatever, it is not going to be 5800. The likely explanation is that BD got samples built up for promotional reasons and photographed it, but production bikes come with Tektro or similar, so if they have a photo showing Shimano 5800 brakes and the bike comes with something else, people will cry foul - even though they are already doing that.

FWIW, I have never heard of anyone getting anything other than exactly what they ordered from BD. Most complaints are related to the hassle required to return something for warranty service, or from people who did not realize they had to do their own maintenance.

I saw one thread about a customer who ordered a single speed bike but was shocked that it came with a 170mm crankset. The product description *said* it came with a 170mm crank, but he assumed that was a mistake.

So are they saying the groupset is worth $2200? Because I'm pretty sure I can get it for under $1200 from UK

This is one thing I think you can fairly blame BD for: their "retail price" or "this is an $X,XXX value bike!" claims are always a bit ridiculous. They're usually talking full retail pricing in these comparisons. Also, when they talk complete bikes, some times the specs aren't directly comparable. In this case, BD is likely including the cockpit, saddle seatpost, headset, cables etc in their calculation. Also, in fairness while the 6870 can be found for $1,200 through online European sellers or Ebay, it's more commonly priced at $1,700-$2,000 at an LBS or US-based site. Again, this full retail pricing isn't a true reflection of "reality on the ground".

I will say that if you buy from BD, you need to understand exactly what you're getting in terms of sizing, individual specs and build. You need to know a lot about bikes and every component / part needs to be individually considered. You need to do your own calculation of "savings" (which is generally substantial, if far below the company's claims). As far as I know, BD has never been outright deceptive about any of these things. People who complain generally don't fully understand what they ordered.

Why would you take their 'msrp' claims seriously? THey have exactly the same marketing as every discount furniture and appliance store - they compare their regular prices to msrp, even though nobody actually sells for msrp.

Anyhow, add to your online groupset price the price of basic carbon frame and fork, headset and seatpost, and a pair of wheels and the BD price is still quite reasonable.

At $1,999? That's crazy (in a good way). The Tarmac Sport with a 105 mix retails at $2,100. I know there is more to it, but still, that's pretty impressive if it rides well.

Ohhh.....sweet geebus.

OK - It's a MAP issue. Shimano has pooped the bed with regard to price control in the market place. It's a long story and I've covered it many times here on this forum. Shimano has been, at the heavy handed demand of the US distribution and retail structure, been "working" on improving their price control.

All major brands have a MAP - what they often refer to as their Minimum Advertised Price ...but some have now started calling it a Minimum Allowable Price even in their own documentation.

These pricing policies are barely legal in the US and they CAN'T prevent a business from selling to the public for less - as that's price fixing, but they can eliminate that dealer's ability to gain access to product. In the UK - they don't apply. They also have a different dealer and wholesale structure. This has resulted in eons of the EU and UK having pricing that allows them to sell Shimano direct to end customers at prices that are often the same price as US dealer's wholesale price.

Last year Shimano eliminated a TON of it's US distributors. It pulled back to really only doing business through QBP or direct. This made US access to Shimano parts sketchy and expensive.

You can read about some of this in the cover article in last Bicycle Retailer: New BRAIN issue looks at Shimano distribution, cycling media | Bicycle Retailer and Industry News

here's another interesting take - remember when I said Shimano pulled back and focused on QBP to handle their distribution....here's what QBP thinks:
QBP?s Steve Flagg urges dealers to support exclusive brands that maintain MAP pricing | Bicycle Retailer and Industry News

Fun.

Now - Bikes Direct is ordering and buying the bike setups they are getting as OE market product either through the buyers in the frame houses or assembly factories they are working with or at least in the OE market. This gets them pricing on levels that are way below what the aftermarket and retail/wholesalers markets are. Normal in the industry and it's how all of the bike companies make their margins.

I can only assume that the guys charged with pursuing price leakage int he US are being asked by pissed off IBD's (LBSs) to pursue everything and everyone. The head of the NBDA is a known hater of Bikesdirect and despises them and would like nothing more than to see them disappear. The blurring of the photos makes a lot of what they are doing fall back in line with MAP policies. I applaud them as this is a middle finger to the industry and it's piss poor regulations and short sighted global management. The whole thing needs an overhaul and the people losing are the ones in the industry who are trying to give cyclists what they want.

The consumers don't lose as long as they go over seas and pay the real price of what these components apparently are really worth as that's what market factors have determined.

I've owned a BD bike in the past, and have always been sort of a fan- but I find the phony "compare to MSRP price...."; and now this "mystery components" thing to be a BIG turn-off. I'd hate to recommend BD to someone, and then have them come back to me and say "WTH?". Nice bikes...but very cheesy marketing. (The website is fine- it's simple to navigate and compare; and gives you much info at a glance.)

I agree that the "compare to MSRP" is a joke, and everyone with half a brain knows it. But I'll disagree with you on the "mystery components". Yes, it seems weird, and I wish they would just put a disclaimer like "Due to contractual obligations and limitations on what we can advertise, we can not list the details of the included groupset. Please email us for details." I really don't think they WANT to blur out the details, and they will gladly tell you if you email them. I in no way see it as sleazy, I see it as unfortunate.

I imagine part of the reason UK bike dealers get Shimano stuff cheaper and sell it for less because there's a 20% tax paid on it when you buy it over there.

That doesn't explain all of the price difference, but part of it.
