Shimano bar end shifters rebuildable ?
I have a Shimano Dura Ace 9 speed bar end shifter on my touring bike that skips over 4th gear when using it in index mode.
Had it quite a while so it is not surprising. Can they be rebuilt or do I have to buy new ones ?

It's an odd mode of failure. Before doing anything else, I'd cross my fingers and flush it with something like WD-40 and hope for the best.
Otherwise, I don't think it'll be serviceable.

you could try cleaning and greasing the mechanisms... use the correct shimano light grease... the pawls get blocked from entering the ratchet ring or get stuck from dirt/old grease chunks.
a good cleaning/regrease is the solution more times than not.
this holds true for most shifter failures on older bikes.

Probably with a set of parts from a DT shifter. I will check in my shop tomorrow.

They do eventually wear out but skipping just one shift is unusual. Agree that a thorough cleaning is the first step.

9 speed Shimano bar ends are notorious for cracking in the bezel which causes shifting problems as the internal parts begin to slip past each other instead of engaging. It starts off subtly like the derailleur needs adjustment but worsens quickly. Look for a crack in the plastic bezel. Never heard of anyone being able to rebuild one.

Good point, and just about the best case you can hope for.
Those plastic parts will make an interesting sight when you open up a badly worn bar end shifter. One look inside and I was sourcing a new shifter.
It might be possible to rebuild the shifter, if you could find parts. AFAIK Shimano doesn't make them or sell them separately. If you're so inclined, you might buy a new shifter, measure everything very precisely, and save the resulting design to "additively manufacture" new parts as needed a few years down the road.
