Interesting freewheel hub - cartridge bearings
I’m currently building up a shop spares city bike for my wife. It’s going to be a 7 speed flatbar bike. I have a set of wheels, no name English thread freewheel hub on Wolber Gentleman 81 rims, that have been sitting in my shop for a couple of years awaiting overhaul. I removed the NDS locknut but the cone was weird in that it was pretty tight, so I went to drive side and loosened the “cone” only to find the whole axle threaded out like this. I pried off the bearing seals and they looked pretty good so I stuffed some Phil Wood grease in and put everything back together. Spins pretty well. I’m assuming this is from late 80’s or early 90’s. First time I’ve come across a freewheel hub with cartridge bearings.

A nice very common bearing (SKF 6001-RS1), can be found for about $5.00 each.

Probably Specialized. I have a set. Chrome covers that have Specialized on them. Very good hubs.

It's a Sanshin. I think of them as Sanshin Gyromaster because that was the first I saw. Lots of slightly different versions. Sold as SunTour and Specialized. Also sold with no markings at all. Wonderful hubs. Really wonderful hubs. One of best ever.

I’ve got suize hubs like that on my 84 pro tour, and a mixed set of Sansin and suntour superbe pro on my prelude that I found at the thrift store. Great hubs all around.

Thanks all, good info. It does seem like a solid hub. No marks on it. These came on a bike I bought but can’t remember for sure which one.

Here is my Specialized front hub. The lettering has worn off the dust cover, but the sealed band is still on. The rear still has the lettering, but no band.

I'm having the same issue with my DS rear wheel but my dust cover/cone doesn't quite come off. I tried pulling on the cone itself but it seems pressed into the dust cover. Any ideas?
