I'm truly sorry to learn about your health problems with your eyes. I wish you and full and speedy recovery! Keep us posted on your progress, please.

Surgery on Tuesday AM. The surgeon said I could probably ride okay immediately with the procedure that was used, but out of an abundance of caution I asked if it wouldn't be better to stay off the bike and trainer until my follow up visit next Tuesday. He agreed. So I might sneak in a ride next Tuesday and or Wednesday or I might not. We're headed for England next Wednesday afternoon, so I'll have to be off the bike until the middle of February any way.

The weird vision in the affected eye would make riding on the road annoying if not ill-advised any way. Hopefully the eyesight gets better by then. If not it sounds like I have to wait an additional month or so before they remove the oil bubble they installed. Lots of fun.

Yes, not the kind of post to hit the "like" button. Don't take chances with your vision. Get well! Enjoy England, keep us posted.

13kms, -2lbs this week
125kms, -7.4lbs mtd

Very little riding for me this week. Weather was making me very lazy so I took the bus instead of riding my bike.

I was eating a big breakfast at home and a small lunch at work, and dinner. I thought I would try skipping breakfast instead and that worked out okay for the past couple of days. Now I'm considering a big lunch and some snacks instead of dinner.

I had concerns about not being able to work as well if I ate less frequently but so far it hasn't been that bad. It was a bit rocky when I started cutting out carbs at the start but now it's a lot easier to get over the hunger pangs. I'm thinking getting to only one meal a day might actually be a possibility. Not that I don't like to eat. I love to eat.

I'm hoping to hit 200 in the next couple of weeks.

1/11: 17.3
1/17: 17.3

Getting close to the goal, but Sunday and Monday are going to be rain/snow. Tonight was 28F, but it has been a warmish January so we've been getting more rain. No really cold weather on the horizon.

(Just Another) Metric Monday. Tackled the hills on the road around Palos Verdes, they've intimidated me for some time, but I finally rode them and they weren't that bad. Only 29 miles to meet my goal this month, might have to kick it up a notch.

We got 6 inches of snow. Hoping the path is clear enough to ride tomorrow night, because more snow/rain on Wednesday.

The towns around here all cleared the bike path of snow, so I got out tonight. Much slower ride than usual because of the unpredictable black ice, but I managed the miles. Almost fell just once, ironically when dismounting at a road crossing. More snow/rain tomorrow, Friday I'm busy, but the weekend looks decent.

160 miles on bikes, 46 walking
49 miles on my farmers market Raleigh Competition
111 miles on my avatar photo TiCycles fix gear.

Hitting 70 in a couple of months. If I don't start walking, it is pretty obvious all the riding in the world isn't going to save me from balance/tripping issues and my many bike miles have not strengthened my bones. So I am taking this on like it is the next thing I have to 1) master and 2) get to love. It's been fun.

Good for you! Crank out those walking miles. Consider a dog for company; walking dogs can bring great comfort.

Pretty windy out there today, but it was warmer so I won't complain. This ride went a little slower than Monday's, but today's had 5,200 feet of climbing compared to Monday's 4,100. Guess I might as well do another 9.5 miles to round off this month's work.

No. Sadly a dog would bring back my allergy issues. I lived 7 years with a cat. Mutual love. But I had to severely limit time with her. And she got that. Now, if I walked in the house with clothes headed for the wash and me the shower, she'd be right there. I'd pick her up, hold her to my chest and feel this warm, loud motor. Put her down and she'd leave the room. "Time with Ben is done."

She passed on a Friday, Next day we buried her. Monday I felt better than I had in years. Dogs may be better, but it would only be a matter of degree. And a dog would be much less likely to be with those days of no contact. (She was one sweet, understanding cat.)

73kms this week, 198 kms mtd
-2.4lbs this week, -11.4 mtd

At this rate I will be exiting my mini clydehood phase sometime next week. I will have reversed the damage I did in 2022.

The heaviest I had ever been was sometime in 2017/18, in the low 230s. I shaved that down to 180ish early 2019. And then it was back up to 216 in 2022. I could blame covid but really I just like to eat. I ate when I was doing nothing, and I also ate when I was doing something, like working or watching tv or videos.

The weather is starting to get better. Today was nice and sunny, no rain. It'll be like that for a couple of days at least, so there'll be some time to go out and ride. Days are getting longer too so a little bit more light.

My goal is to hit 180 sometime in April or May.

My other goals are to have a 200km day by April, and hopefully join a brevet in July.

This is the bike I might do it on. I wish it were a size smaller but it's what was available. I have a couple other bikes that might work as well, this one is just the newer one. I'll have to finish this one up and then decide.

Well...I'm going to fall short for the month. I had laser surgery a couple of weeks ago for a torn retina. I had some additional symptoms last weekend so I bumped up my follow up visit a few days and went back in this past Monday. Partially detached retina in a slightly different area.

I just saw this email after a couple of weeks away. Sorry to hear about the surgery, take it easy and listen to the doctor, that's what you are paying them for. Best wishes for a speedy and complete recovery. Provide us with updates.
