Do you replace your rear tire because it starts to square off?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Do you replace your rear tire because it starts to square off?

I have a set of gp5000s with roughly 2800 miles on them. The rear tire has pretty much square off and has a flatter spot in the middle of the entire tire. There are no rips, tears or punctures. I was hoping to make past winter, but is it worth replacing now?

I've always ridden tires till the cords are wearing through or they get a puncture or cut that bulges too much when inflated to normal pressure.

There are a few times I changed one early because I had a big important ride coming up.

2800 miles is nothing for my GP5000's. I'm expecting to have to change them when they have 6000 or more on them.

That's always when I replace tires - I usually get around 2,000 miles on the GP5000s.

It wont hurt to keep riding the tire. I usually replace them if I start getting punctures.

No. What about the wear indicators?? The little dimples. If they are worn it's time to think about replacement.

Now would be a good time to swap it to the front.

I run Rubino Pros until threads start to show - 3000-3500 on a rear tire

I’ve checked them
over. I have a couple rides this weekend that should equal 110 miles. I’ll swap them after. I’ll carry 3 tubes...just in case! Thanks

Man, that tire's got a lot of miles left it in. Send it to datlas if you take it off after the weekend.

Everyone does what makes them comfortable. As long as you are the only one that rides your bike, you should too.

If you enjoy replacing tires, do it as often as you want.

Damn, I just finally threw out all the old useless worn out tires I've been saving for well over 10 years. It'll take me at least 3K to 4K more miles to be able to participate. So maybe by late summer since I run my mouth fingers more than I ride my bike. <grin>

Yeah, I think that’s the answer. I am surprised no one else mentioned it earlier.

Squared off tyres on the front do not handle very well.
Also more likely to puncture which is less desirable on the front.

Correct. New tire goes on front. Move front to rear.
