M5 X 12mm screws for bike rack/carrier

I need to buy screws to attach a to a mountain bike, (Mikyta Elevation 400). Is this the proper screw/thread size. I plan to go to my local hardware store.

The correct thread size is M5x0.8mm and the 12 mm length should be adequate unless the rack stays are a bit thick. A 15 mm length would give you more tolerance. These bolts should be low cost so get a couple of lengths.

In a pinch, a 10-32 will also work. The diameter and pitch is essentially indistinguishable from an M5x0.8 mm bolt. Personally, I prefer stainless and not all hardware stores carry stainless metric socket heads. Most all of them I’ve been to do carry stainless 10-32, however.

In a pinch, yes but a 10-32 bolt is a sloppy fit in an M5x0.8 tapped hole and an M5x0.8 bolt is an excessively tight fit in a 10-32 tapped hole. For a relatively high load like a rack leg, buy the correct bolts.

It’s not sloppy. I’ve used 10-32 for rack mounts for ages. Never had a problem with one working loose.

Many Ace Hardware aka A-Boy have very good metric bolt sections. You will see a wide variety of heads and materials. I like the SS pan heads for lot of bike stuff.
