Unused cycling kits - keep or toss?

Summer in my part of the world is coming to a end. As I reflect on the cycling kits I wore this summer, some bib shorts/jerseys saw a lot of action. Others stayed in my drawer the entire summer.

So now I don't know what to do. Keep the kits for those days when I might have missed a wash cycle and don't have anything to wear. Or toss the kits because I am clearly not wearing them and I like sticking with the rule that if I don't use something for a year, toss it.

The kits that did not see any action this summer are also getting a little long in the tooth, maybe three years old or so. The chamois may not be as fresh as it once was. But then again, I can't be sure b/c I haven't worn them all summer

What do you guys/gals suggest? Hold on to them or toss? What do you do with your older cycling clothing?

I keep 'em around for (at home) trainer sessions and to be worn under tights in the winter - I'd rather do that the put more wear and tear on newer bibs that I actually like.

Send them to me. if they fit, the ride, if not, they go to a charity thrift store (which is probably a waste, as not a lot of customer base overlap between a thrift store and a cycle shop.)

What I find amusing is that you made up some rule for yourself (toss it if I don't use it in a year (and are now ready to waste some brand-new and reasonably expensive merchandise because of your own rule./

Myself? If I find a good deal on bike wear (where the prices are already ridiculous and only grow more ridiculous each season) I stock up, I have several jerseys and pairs of gloves I have never worn because I know that what I bought on closeout a year ago will be on sale for three times the price in a few years when I need more.

But hey .... make up rules for yourself based on absolutely no utility, and then get all confused because you can't understand your own rules. You go, brother.

Edited without changing the meaning in any meaningful way.

Throw the lot of them down a 10 step flight of stairs. Only keep those items that land on stair 4 and stair 6.

shoulda bought wool jerseys = great sleepwear when worn out.

For Fall riding I have a set of 3/4 tights (no pad) to cover the knees, then use the older shorts (with worn pad) over tights. Overly worn bibs get tossed.

Shoes I manage to keep a long time.

I get two new kits each season, so I've accumulated plenty of clothes. For the most part I hang on to them for riding on the trainer, under tights, whatever.

If a guy posted a thread here about walking on water, with a video of him doing it; he'd get dog piled for making ripples in the water. For some around here, the moral high ground is at skyscraper height.

OP,
You could donate them to a local bike coop or charitable organization. If they can get use out of them/sell them, all the better. If they can't, no harm done and they'll go in the trash.

What exactly in the OP do you think analogizes to a video of walking on water?

After keep it, toss it or donate it have been offered on the subject, what more do you think there was left to say? OP is describing one of the trivial dilemmas we all face in a day. Nothing wrong with discussing them, but jeez there's nothing wrong with having a bit of sense of humor about it.

Your donation suggestion is fine, but your complaint about dog piling is a perfect example of the moral posturing you're complaining about.

I've read that most donated clothing ends up in landfills after being shipped around the world. Donate only the nicer jerseys, trash the faded or stretched ones. Trash the shorts/bibs, nobody will want them.

We have a couple of youth clubs that are "sponsored" by a couple of LBS. I know at one point they accepted donations. Don't know if the clothing had to be new, but I doubt it. Probably serviceable would do.

Tommy Elliot from St. Louis asks:

I grow old... I grow old...
I shall wear the bottoms of my trousers rolled.
Shall I part my hair behind? Do I dare to eat a peach?
I shall wear white flannel trousers, and walk upon the beach.
I have heard the mermaids singing, each to each.
I do not think that they will sing to me.

You notice that story is not at all specific about the long-term effects of eating green eggs. I think that could be a life-altering decision, and not in a good way.
