WTB near UCLA -- tall campus bike

My friends here in the Bay Area have a son at UCLA, and they are looking for a bike for him, ideally available in LA. They're looking for something that won't be a theft magnet, but it should be functional. I would love to help them find an old MTB with racks, or at least eyelets and mounts to make that easy. They're looking to spend around $200-400, so it's a workable budget for something middle of the road and cosmetically challenged, but mechanically sound. The young man in question is 6'4", so I'm guessing that's a 62cm or thereabouts (or smaller seat tube for an MTB)?

If anyone has anything interesting, please let me know and I can put you in touch with the parents.

Thank you!

Check the latter few pages of the frame doesn't fit thread. I don't know what area they're in, but I know there's some frames. And, I think a big bike or two? don't hold me to it...lol

Well, they're really looking for a complete bike because their son is not a tinkerer, and I'm not in a position to help them by working on it myself, unfortunately, because of location. We're perusing Craigslist, but I just wanted to put feelers out in case someone on BF C&V has something in or near LA. In my opinion, buying from someone on BF removes a layer of uncertainty that a regular Craigslist purchase brings.

I'm 6'1 and I need a 63. Depending on leg length your student may need a 65.

would-be owner/cyclist needs to verify their best frame size for discussion thread to have any meaning

to me "6' 4" " translates to 65cm or better...

too bad noobinsf would be unable to work on a prospective machine as am near to him and have a KHS complete machine of ~66cm in "as found" condition - i.e. not ready to ride

Thanks for thinking of this, juvela ! Ben was kind enough to send a couple of prospects, but they're too small for the young giant. I'll PM you, because I have been sending CL ads to the buyer, and her son will be visiting sometime in October, so she may be interested.

Moderators, could you please close this thread? I checked in with my friend last night, and they've found and bought a suitable bike for her son in LA. Thanks, everyone!
