Motorcycle chain on bicycle?

My singlespeed Bianchi ~1980 city bike has what appears to be a motorcycle chain. Was this a thing or more of a “we need a chain and we have this laying around…” scenario?

Perhaps the previous owner was a really strong sprinter and had a problem with broken chains.

Maybe it made them feel more macho?

A long while back someone here asked how to make bikes slower. Most of us took it as a joke, however, you could want to make your bike slower to get more of a workout in less miles covered. Maybe that was the goal.

I thought about building a single speed with a chainsaw chain. If anyone stole it, I could follow the blood spots and find them and the bike. Of course, there might be blood spots leading to my house too.

I doubt sprinting and workouts were a factor. This thing an urban beast with an integral rear rack for carrying stuff so a motorcycle chain kind of makes sense?

Single speed chain draped across what’s on the bike

Could be 428 chain, same 1/2" pitch as a bicycle but wider.

I think you are correct sir. Pin length on single speed chain is 8.8mm, pin length on the behemoth is a whopping 13.8.

Anyone need a motorcycle chain? 😬

That's the chain size on my Gitane (pic of build in progress, sorry, is non-drive side):

Sweet!! I’ll spare you the indignity of receiving a crappy old chain and toss mine in the recycle bin.

Trade and delivery bikes used 1/2" X 3/16 chains. Measure the outside of the plates. They are still available outside of the bike industry.

You are spot on regarding the chain in situ. I measured the thickness of the chainring and it’s identical to my Raleigh 3 speed - 1/8”. Since the bike’s days of being a workhorse are over 1/8 chain will be fine.

Thanks for the input y’all! Time to break out (pun…) my motorcycle chain breaker.
