WTB Universal Mod. 61 Brake Hoods, pref. Black

Hi all,

I’m getting near the finish line on my 68 Frejus restoration, and I’m thinking that the Ami hoods I currently have on the bike just don’t look right. This bike is calling for its old pals, the Universal Mod. 61 brake hoods that originally came on it. I’m throwing out the net to see if anyone on here may have a spare set they are willing to sell. The bike has black rubber Universal brake adjusters, and I would like the hoods to match if at all possible (see pic). Anyone have a spare set they are willing to part with?

Thanks!!

Thanks!

I don't have a set but I wish someone would make a reproduction hood that would fit universal brake levers. The ones on the bay tend to have crazy prices.

A fellow forum member made this set for me. Well, not just for me. He did, at one time, offer them for sale. Anyway, if he chimes in, great. This is the set I have had fitted for three or four years now and I have a second nos set tucked away...

Hi Miguel,

yeah, me too Ebay is way expensive. I found aftermarket gum hoods at a reasonable price, but I can’t find matching gum adjuster covers. That’s why I’m hoping to find a set of black ones, but would be okay with a matching set of gums too!

Thanks Randyjawa,

I would be more than happy to get a matching set of gum hoods and adjuster hoods! Those look great! I hope the other member chimes in!

By the way, this is where I’m at on the Frejus restore. This is the bike I want the hoods for. I Still need to polish up the stem and bars, as well as the hubs and rims. Also waiting for cables to come in from Serbia, and tubs to come in the mail too. I replaced the “Frejus” decals on the down tube, the originals were in awful shape, as well as the championship colors decals on the seattube. These came from VeloCals and the quality was great. Unfortunately, I also replaced the decals on the fork with another company in England, the quality isn’t quite as good.

Beautiful work on a worthy subject! Good luck with the hoods! Maybe @randyjawa can share the forum name of the member so we can ping him.

If you can't find a NOS set, Rustines makes a decent reproduction:

These look great. Have you bought them from a vendor in the States or eBay? I searched but didn't find much. Or do you have to order these from France? It looks as if the Rustine website will let you order these for delivery to the US

I've not ordered the Universal type hoods from Rustines, but I bought a couple of sets of their Campagnolo type hoods directly from their website, and they were easy to deal with. Quality of the product is first rate.
There might be someone in the US that stocks these...but they're a fairly new item for Rustines and probably not a lot of demand here in the US.

You might try velo-orange. They have a bunch of rustines in stock. Emailing for another style is a possibility: https://velo-orange.com/collections/rustines

Thanks for the helpful comments everyone So, I found these for $27 on eBay. They are gum-like replica tan hoods. I messaged the seller and he also offers matching adjuster (he calls them regulator) hoods for an extra $5. I have no idea what the adjuster hoods look like, or their quality, so I hope I made the right decision. I will be sure to post pictures of them when I receive them in the mail. They are coming from Italy so it may be a while... here is the link:

I saw these earlier and considered buying them. Interested to see what you think. The rustines look good also and I like their mafac replacement hoods.

I think that's a first-rate restoration on a top flight bike. Nice job!
