SRAM RED brakes leaking

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

SRAM RED brakes leaking

First day in the 70s here in Wisconsin... I was ready to go out on the brand new bike and I realize there was some fluid on the hoods. I realized the brake lever was leaking... Likely brake fluid. The brakes worked, but you could hear "bubbles" when activating the brake. They are brand new (SRAM RED ETap)

So took it to the store.... The guy said he has never seen that and the drains for the brake fluid was tight. He said I was going to have to leave the bike and he was going to call SRAM on Monday. He had no new sets available to switch. So there goes the ride.
:-(

Anyways, anyone has seen this before? The tech was quite surprised and is a big popular store so they fix a high amount of bikes.

I rail on SRAM all the time, but this sounds like a problem caused by a mechanic or factory assembly worker.

So not leaking where the hose goes in? New lever I'd assume the first step is pull the hose, cut past the barb, install a new olive and replace. Usually new bike comes installed from the factory but it doesn't mean that every few thousand bikes someone doesn't do it wrong. Even new in the box my new levers are pre-installed in the lever just have to do the work myself at the brake and then bleed.

Could be leaking from the reservoir cover plate.

I've seen all sorts of issues over the years but usually basic ones.

This one in particular I have seen on one unit I got new last fall for a customer. Bladder seal was folded under the reservoir cap. pull the cap and straighten out the bladder and tighten the cap down and no problems. It doesn't leak immediately because that bladder kind of swells a bit when in the presence of the DOT fluid. Usually develops the leak later. I keep the bladder/reservoir parts kit on hand just in case. Easy part kit to get from QBP (for the shop). Calling SRAM will result in a warranty and they will swap it but that's time and a lot of work.

it’s all good. I don’t hate SRAM, only their road components, and all their hydraulic brakes.

I actually just purchased a bike with SRAM components.

This doesn't really help the OP. I don't understand why every SRAM-related thread needs to have some editorializing from people that don't like SRAM. We get it already. DaveSSS will chime in soon with his boiler plate 2 Choruses for 1 SRAM AXS comment.

It does sound like an assembly error. Seems like Psimet2001 has a pretty good idea.

I said right away that it wasn't really a SRAM issue

"I rail on SRAM all the time, but this sounds like a problem caused by a mechanic or factory assembly worker"

Then some butt-hurt fanboy needed to chime in.

Maybe if you toned down the snark about 10 dB? Looking back at the few SRAM-related threads I started, there you were right near the beginning to offer some mean-spirited commentary. It gets old. I'm not a SRAM fanboy. I could probably be happy on any manufacturer's drivetrain, for the most part. Try to remember that we all love cycling and are coming here with sincere questions/concerns/issues/comments.

Sram road components, and especially their hydraulic brakes, are garbage. If they improve in quality, I'll change my tune.

Letting members of the forum believe that SRAM makes quality road components, would be doing a disservice to them.

You seemed to have drank some "alternate fact" Kool-Aid.

You seem to be confused between fact and opinion.

I've ridden Sram Rival, Rival CX1 HRD, Red 22 and Red eTap for over 40,000 miles and never had any problems with shifting, drivetrain or brakes.

So in my OPINION you are wrong. Feel free to disagree, but your OPINION is not a FACT.

My only beef with sram is their pushing 1x road and cross which I can't stand. I'm now 10 years on a force group and my wife is 12 years on a rival group and I can't think of any major problems we've ever had with their stuff, actually put her on rival to get away from the 105 her bike came with. My force originally had a shifting issue and sram swapped the chainrings and problem solved. Don't see what isn't quality about the parts we have and how flawlessly they've worked since; maybe you had an issue with something of theirs, or the problem with the quality of the mechanic who perhaps didn't do the job right but on the whole I can't complain about their stuff any more then shimano's. Right now I just choose to boycott both for their price fixing scheme of not allowing buying from Europe and overcharging us here but that just got me my new Campy group and speaks nothing of their quality which seems fine to me.

I have ridden both camps and I like SRAM best. I have a mix of non-wireless of course Force and Red. I am old school I guess. Ridden Shimano 105 and Ultegra and liked it.....SRAM to me is just a tad better for my way.

To each their own.

I have Rival CX1 on my SuperX and it's great. It's my "winter" and foul weather bike so the cost of replacing the drivetrain is about the same as a Red cassette. Since we both live on Long Island we know there are no mountains so replacing the 11-28 with a 11-32 means there's nothing I can't get up with a 40T in the front.

There is no single bike that does everything, so we can't assume there's a drivetrain that does everything. There's certainly a place for 1x but it's not for everyone.

leaking brakes is far less common than a broken or seized cable.
