Surely this is a ticking time bomb awaiting to happen. I want to get a highend XC full suspension mtb, and I keep hoping for the hordes to start selling. Do you think it will happen in the Fall?

There will never be a glut of bikes. People hold on to bikes for quite a while after they buy them. The bike industry depends on it to some extent.
Our CL has a few new bikes for sale that don't look like scams. Not a glut.

In ten years, the seller will post them for sale, "Hardly used", for $500 less than MSRP "FIRM". Possibly even including a pic of the original receipt.

Honestly, I hope people just keep riding them and we see a lasting increase in cycling interest.

They're all e-bikes and the batteries will be toast; I expect they'll go to the dump.

Given that gluttony is one of the seven deadly sins, one hopes there will never be a “gluttony” of bikes.

Our CL already has a "gluttony of bikes". (actually always has) Most are over priced and not moving.

in my area, usually in May, when colleges prepare to let out for the summer, many kids dump the bikes they've been torturing for 4 years. but everything school related is off kilter now. so maybe next May?

Hard to say. Two C&V bikes I bought this year had been largely unused for 10 years in one case and at least 30 in another.

Maybe that's a glut of really tony bikes, like Colnagos and Pinarellos?

And yet considerably less is often delivered.

Might take some time. Article in the news just the other day said demand is still sky high, manufactures can't keep up, shipping is backlogged and bike shops are barely scraping by due to a lack of inventory.

Maybe not so much bikes but indoor bike machines like the Peloton may be flooding the market in the next year or so.

Our local TV news had a story last week about "you can't buy a bike because there are no parts to build them." I figure that's enough for the hoarders to hang onto the bikes they bought last year for another summer. And then there's no sense selling them in the winter, because who rides bikes in the winter?

There'll be a spread, as there always is. Fastidious housewives will force the sale of a few bikes next summer. Peak CL sales are probably 5-10 years away, tailing off for the next 30-50 years as people die or move into assisted living homes.

The "I'm not using this, so I should sell it on craigslist" phase of bike ownership is probably around years 3-5 for most people.

It's a lot easier to justify a bike hanging in your garage that you only use a few times a month than it is to justify a treadmill or Peloton sitting in your living room/bedroom.

My prediction is that this fall (3 months from now?) the bike/parts supply situation will look pretty much the same as it does right now.

Bikes sit around a lot in garages. So until people get tired of moving them around they don’t get sold often. As far as parts right now the Shimano plant is shut down due to covid.

2020 used bikes for sale.

All the 2020 Bikes wont come out for sale until the next Bike shortage.
Then they'll be dusted off and placed for sale in the hope of covering most of the original cost.

People had better hold onto them. If their car breaks down, they'll either get discouraged trying to find a new car (have you been by dealer lots lately? Think bike supply is bad?), have to pay an outrageous amount for a used car, or...... ride the bike.

the EB's will force the manual labor bicycles out to the curb, into the markets, & tossed to the local donation center.

No. It will be years.

You only want one. If you find one good one, there does not need to be a lot of them.
