Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

If I sat down at a cafeteria table and all the people nearby got up and left, it would prompt me to do some introspection.

To be clear, this never happened to me in real life, obviously.

In PHX again next week.

Almost died yesterday. might be a little dramatic but it def scared the **** out of me. It was super windy, but I only had one day home and wanted to ride even if it was a short one. I took madone which prolly was not the best choice with the wind and all. I didn’t get blown around too much but I was descending a hill, tucked in instead of pedaling. At the bottom of the hill there is a small lake to the left so it’s wide open. As soon as I reached the open area the wind coming off the lake grabbed my front wheel and blew me laterally like 4 feet. A car had passed me seconds before and for some reason I happened to take the center of the road again, if I had no done that I doubt I would be writing this.

Newport-Bermuda ride is getting its bottom filled, faired, and covered with hard, racing paint. Excuses for poor performance are evaporating rapidly.

Hooray for the filthy rich!

That was my response to the Modern Family where Haley is caught drunk at college at gets into trouble. The drinking isn't the problem; the problem is being careless enough to get caught.

Well, THAT was a f***ing debacle!!

Last night, I did my first race as a newly minted "C" on Zwift. Crit race, 8 laps of "Bell Lap". It was a Category Enforcement Race, a new thing Zwift is doing. I went ripping out of the start gate, having read that, instead of ramping up your power in the last 20 seconds, you should just sprint like mad at -0:02, and it worked! I shot to the front! But pretty soon they left me for dead. I ended up riding with another Deadite, then outsprinting him at the end. I ended up 14th out of 20. The guy who won - by about 2:33 over me - is the guy I beat at the line to take 1st in the first race I ever did on Zwift.

The funny thing is, I can do higher power for longer than that, like climbing AdZ, but it was really hard tonight. Perhaps what I need to do is to cut my Trainer Difficulty back, maybe to zero, so that I don't feel the hills but just put out constant power. It's worth a shot!

Dude! Geez! That's a bit more adventure than you look for in a ride.

I can't say I've ever been pushed that far by wind, but for some reason, the Bianchi is VERY vulnerable to crosswinds. It feels like it's going to be blown out from under me.

My favorite is from a Blackish episode where the police bust a high school party, and Chloe responds "I'm glad you arrived, officers, I hear there were some kids drinking at this party."
