Addiction 2022.3

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Agree, but I do find his sophomoric/irreverent style to be entertaining in small doses, and I suspect he and I are on the same page regarding the censor/filter.

Traveling, so haven't been able to get back to it.

Jacket is no worse than some bike kit I've seen. It said "Rapha" on the label.

So, 6 speed freewheel, downtube shifters, and crappy brakes?

Solo list looks cool, I actually really like the new S5 a lot. One of the locals I ride with frequently has a 2020 S5. Its growing on me, and sounds like a space ship.

I initially read that as "soloist" as in Soloist Assassin

Very cool! When I was in HS, I had plans of becoming an Architect, and FLW's architecture was impactful to me. My life didn't take me down that path, but my appreciation of his work remains. We have this example in my area...

We did a tour of Fallingwater maybe 12-13 years ago, when we were doing a Family Reunion in West Virginia. What surprised me about it was how SMALL it was. You don't get a sense of the size from the pictures. Also, what an innovation it must have been when it was built.

I went for a short but refreshing walk at lunchtime. I snapped this pic of a marble slab that is about 1 foot x 2 feet and about 8 inches thick. There are several in town. A colleague told me what it’s for, as I did not know. Anyone care to guess??

Enjoying a day off at Bald Eagle State Park after a crazy night of rain and a very hard day the day before that.

Saw a ruffed grouse yesterday, which is Pennsylvania’s state bird.

Must include best places to throw up, plentiful shade for the light-sensitive, and how to silence "that incredibly loud grinding sound" made by a properly adjusted drivetrain.

EDIT: This would be the perfect Larry thread.

BTW, saw him on the road on Friday. He really does wave at everybody. This is why I think of him as a Golden Retriever Puppy - big, happy, and friendly, galumphing through life happily heedless of danger.

You just reminded me as I need to get a can of this stuff. My Merckx Strada arrived yesterday, also my first ever steel frameset that I'm building up.

I was thinking it should also have references to riding to dumpsters to look for vodka bottles. You know.

So I have stopped using saddle bags. In my growing sense of vanity, I hate the way they look. So in my pockets I bring my phone, a tube, 2 tire levers, my mini tool and a protein bar. If I’m on the ritchey I bring a spare downtube clamp. Don’t know if they break but don’t want to find out.

Its not ideal, but it doesn’t really bother me. Today I wore my new matching kit, and the material is super stretchy, so by the end of the ride it felt like the items in my pocket were hanging off my backside. If I tried to sprint, they were bouncing all over the place. This didn’t happen the first time I wore it, and it’s not too big. Thoughts? I’m gunna have to come up with a better solution. I like the mini saddle bags I see, but I don’t think I would be good at fitting that stuff in them.
