Yeah, zero rust on the chrome. I've always wanted to have a bike with chrome socks, and now I finally found one. Not sure about the brakes yet, I have a set of old dual-pivot sidepull Altenburger Synchrons that I will try first. If their stopping power is insufficient, I'll get something more modern (e.g. Tektro, Longus, Saccon). I calculated that I will need about 75mm of brake reach with 650B rims, and the Altenburgers go up to 80mm. Even with 650B, tire width will be limited to around 40mm, because the chain stays are about 45mm wide.
It's going to take weeks to build up this bike. I already found second hand Exage LX500 and Deore XT/LX shifters, crankset, hubs, and derailers (function over form, I'm not worried about keeping it original), but the rims and tires I'm trying to order are out of stock. I will certainly post a picture when it's finished.

The 1985 GranTourer is now rideable. Some details need more attention (e.g. ugly cable stop on downtube). I was planning to build 650b wheels for this bike but I couldn't find rim brake compatible rims with 36 holes anywhere in Europe in size ERTRO 584. I could have bought them from the US for 6 times the normal price plus shipping, but that seemed excessive, so instead I took these wheels from my 1975 Presto road bike. They have fairly wide rims with 32mm Marathons, so they were not ideal for a roadbike anyway. For the Presto I built a new wheelset with lighter, narrower rims and 28mm Paselas, using a nice set of old Shimano 600 hubs I had.

The Altenburger Synchron brakes turned out to be excellent and very powerful brakes. It helps that I had to slide the pads all the way to the top of the slots to fit the brake tracks, so that provides a little bit of extra mechanical advantage.

finally got the Roadwinner together and took it for a decent pedal today .
Everything seemed to work and the ride was very pleasant.

Well, I bought my Koga Miyata Radonneur when I was 27, not really old, neither affluent, but just graduated from University and my first salary went on the Koga Miyata.
Now I am 67 and I am still riding the Koga albeit updated, modernized with 11 speed and more commuter / touring friendly handlebars.

It is still a brilliant bike and my son rides the same bike just a few years younger than mine.

a it late for your needs but I replaced my shimano cup and cone BB with a SRM GRX BB and it works perfectly

Picked up a Terraliner Oval to dehybridize and turn into a gravel tourer. This model (from the late 90ies) sports a spectacular bi-ovalized frame (just under 2 kg) with all the braze-ons and a hefty (1 kg) unicrown fork.


* 10 speed Ergopowers + shiftmate for a 9 speed Shimano cassette

* Frogleggs cantilever brakes

* TA Carmina super compact crankset (29/44).

* On One Midge bar

* Vredestein Aventura tires, 38 mm (chain stays won't accommodate for larger).

* kept the original LX derailleurs, for now.








A very satisfying ride on paved roads, tires feel fast as well, but since taking the bike off-road here involves way too much mud and sludge, I'll postpone that until later.

Things that still need sorting out:

* The Midge bar suits me fine but without bar end shifters the drops are very short. Shorter stem or maybe another bar - undecided yet.
* Indexing is good but the shifting is somewhat slow, needs some tuning.
* Rear Vredestein tire sits a little egg-shaped on the rim. Massaged it till my fingers hurt but it won't budge. Hope some miles will take care of that.
* The original zero offset seat post won't allow adjusting the saddle further to the rear, I'd like a few mm more. Either a different saddle or another seat post.

Hey Jacco, thank you so much! I'm in Switzerland, but close to the German border (have an address in Germany as well). Ich check Marktplaats from time to time...but communication is not always easy and usually, they do not want to ship - and sell it to local buyers. Also I think, I think it's gotten harder and harder to find Koga Miyata frames in tall sizes 63cm and 66cm - especially those allowing for bigger tires with Cantilever brakes. If you see something - please let me know And prices went up as well - for example there is a very nice 1990 Traveller frame (but not 63cm or 66cm) on ebay-kleinanzeigen.de - 550 EUR

Spring and early summer is usually the time when these start popping up. Be patient.
Prices have gone up here as well but I usually see prisitine examples going for €350 at worst.
The €500-700 and up are the early 2000's touring models when the Randonneur was reinstated. Very nice touring bikes but with a matching price tag.
Here's a pristine overhauled example for a cool €1375. Notice the ovalised top tube for extra stiffness.

As for the larger sizes, those will be much rarer outside of the Netherlands. I'm willing to facilitate and ship it to Switzerland for you but keep in mind that shipping a complete bike can get expensive but probably around €100 or so.

What do plan to use it for? In post #95 I plotted all models and their hierarchy in the Koga-Miyata lineup, that's a good starting point.
For touring uses the Traveller, Randonneur, WorldTraveller and RandonneurExtra are good option.
For more of a gravel bike the Hybrid and Sport-Hybrid models like the various TerraLiner models are excellent choices being more of a road bike with wide tyres and for unloaded touring the Adventure and Forest models might be a good choice. But they won't be stiff enough for fully loaded touring with 4 panniers and a handlebar bag.

I've sent you a message on R e d d i t. I'll keep an eye out and if you find something let me know, I'll double check the brochures for you for the original specs.

Also, I'm guessing this is you?

So I picked up the 1996 Adventure in a 66cm frame yesterday for our tall Swiss forum member @tomhaegler . We got it for a good price but failed to see the dent in the downtube. The seller apologised and fixed it with us but it's still a gorgeous colour.
Wine red as it's called in the brochure but not the purple we see up there, but a deep luscious red. Gold lined pink decals.

Just like the 1999 it has a Hardtlite FM-1 double butted chromoly frame and feels surprisingly light. The specs here say 15.3kg (33.73 lbs) for the 60cm model but you could probably get that down quite easily with some lighter parts.

Really curious what he is going to do with it, I heard he is turning it into a drop bar gravel bike

An adapter, the innicycle is on my list. So I kept the nice, Koga branded hybrid ball/needle bearing headset.

Thanks, I bought a cheap one (PRO?), too and will see how it goes. Wanted to buy the NITTO or PROFILE DESIGN one...but hard to find.

A 1985 Randonneur, or what's left of it, that I am using as a test mule for some parts I had accumulated.

If it looks like a rattlecanned, thrown-together parts bin special that's because it is just that.

They are 3-pin Andel cranks from Velovitality. They are nice but with 46/30 rings the set does look a bit small on this bike.
